Directed by internationally celebrated Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke, A Touch of Sin is a compelling anthology combining the elements of drama and action that subtly yet intensely paints a vivid picture of modern-day China. The narrative then shifts to a migrant worker Zhou San (played by Baoqiang Wang), who is on the constant move, carrying with him a dark past and an unstable present. The third story is set in the industrial town of Dongguan, where Xiao Yu (played masterfully by Jia's muse, Zhao Tao) is a receptionist trapped in a tortuous love affair. The final part of the anthology takes us to Yichang, a town on the edge of the Three Gorges Dam, where a young man named Xiao Hui (played by Luo Lanshan) is slipping down the slippery slope in a consumerist society.

Each of these narratives intersects at several points, not necessarily geographically or through their characters, but thematically. The threads that bind them together are the wide-scale socio-economic transformations China is undergoing and how these changes impact individual lives at a granular level, leading to a disconcerting climax. A recurring motif throughout the story is the profound sense of desperation cocooned within the characters, coupled with an air of disillusionment emanating from the promised benefits of China's economic boom which have seemingly bypassed the ordinary individuals, leaving them grappling with both emotional despair and socio-economic problems.
