Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds, a South Korean fantasy drama released in 2017, is the first installment of the popular two-part film series directed by Kim Yong-Hwa. The film's ensemble casts include seasoned actors like Ha Jung-woo, Tae-Hyun Cha, and Ju Ji-Hoon among others. The film opens with a dramatic scene of a death. A heroic firefighter named Ja-Hong Kim, portrayed by Tae-Hyun Cha, unfortunately, meets a tragic end while in the line of duty trying to save a little girl from a burning building. Following his untimely death, he makes a transition into the mysterious spiritual world, known as the afterlife. This adaptation of the afterlife in the movie is treated more as a realm of judgement than a conventional heaven or hell, introducing an intriguing perspective into the story.

Here, he is guided by three guardians - Haewonmak (Jung-woo Ha), Duk-Choon (Dong-seok Ma) and Deok-Chun (Ji-Hoon Ju). They are grim reapers but are also his protectors who will help him navigate the several trials he must face before he can be reincarnated. As Ja-hong becomes the paragon, a paragon is someone who is perceived as selfless in their lifetime and their death, the stakes are high as the grim reapers too will be granted reincarnation if they successfully defend him in the seven different trials in 49 days, each trial scrutinizing a key aspect of his mortal life.

The story is infused with a touch of suspense as the audience is progressively made aware of Ja-Hong’s life, from his inspiring acts of bravery to his seemingly ordinary life riddled with deep-seated secrets and guilt. The revelations about Ja-Hong's life during these trials would leave the audience wondering if he will indeed pass these trials and attain reincarnation.

At the same time, the guardians also have to fight demons that are after their paragon's soul. As such, several twists and turns in the plot keep the viewers on their toes, appealing to a sense of adventure, thrill, and mystery.

Visually, Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds, is a cinematic marvel. From the contrasting portrayal of the earthly world and the afterlife to awe-inspiring battles with demons, the stunning special effects are captivating. Extremely compelling and action-packed sequences like the chase of the guardians trying to save their paragon add to the excitement of the film.

The performances given by the cast members are equally remarkable. Cha Tae-Hyun convincingly portrays the complexity of Ja-hong – a man laden with guilt yet hiding behind a brave front. Ha Jung-Woo’s performance as Haewonmak exudes a charismatic charm while he battles demons with aplomb, and Ju Ji-Hoon, as Deok-Chun, breathes life into his character with his remarkable on-screen charisma. They all convincingly embody their characters, adding a layer of emotional depth to the otherwise action-centric narrative.

The storyline transcends the typical good versus evil archetype and delves into deep introspection about life and our actions. The film's underlined theme prompts the audience to ponder the consequences their actions might have in their afterlife and the ways in which they lead their lives today.
