Bartok the Magnificent

Bartok the Magnificent is an enchanting animated feature released in 1999 under the banner of 20th Century Fox Animation. The film is a direct-to-video spin-off prequel to Anastasia, Fox Animation Studios' successful 1997 production. Hank Azaria, Kelsey Grammer, Andrea Martin, and Catherine O'Hara lead the voice cast, lending singularly exceptional performances that make the movie a treat for the ears as well as the eyes.

Stepping out from the shadow of his erstwhile bosses, the surprisingly heroic albino bat Bartok (voiced by the versatile Hank Azaria, reprising his role from Anastasia), is promoted from supporting character to the star of the show.

The story kicks off in Moscow, where Bartok enjoys a thriving career as a street performer, spellbinding the townsfolk with his charming flamboyance and quick wit. An ardent believer in fairness and equality, Bartok makes the most of his immense likeability to serve as a voice for those unheard in the Russian society.

Twist of fate swoops in, and before he knows, Bartok is thrown into an ambitious journey, quite against his will. Tasked to rescue the young Tsar Ivan, who's been kidnapped by the nefarious witch, Baba Yaga, Bartok has no choice but to step into the dreaded Russian forest for a mission larger than his own life. With sheer courage and witty improvisation, the plucky bat turns this situation into an opportunity to emerge as an unlikely hero.

The challenge seems all the more daunting with the unpredictably mysterious Black Forest and the notorious witch who's known to be skilled in deceptive tricks and illusions. Baba Yaga, voiced to creepy perfection by Andrea Martin, seems to have a penchant for riddles and traps, making Bartok's task even more perilous. She presents Bartok with three impossible tasks, completion of which is the key to the Tsar's freedom.

There's a delightful depth to the characters as the dynamic duo of Bartok and Baba Yaga make their way through an engaging test of wit and determination. The Great Russian Bear, Zozi, splendidly voiced by comic genius Kelsey Grammer, offers endless delight serving as Bartok’s sidekick. His warm-heartedness, wisdom, and courage complement Bartok’s character well, reinforcing the essence of camaraderie and teamwork.

Catherine O'Hara lends her vocal talent as Ludmilla, playing an integral part of the storyline. Through her exceptional voice-acting skills, O'Hara brings out the complexity and nuanced dynamics of her character impressively. Viewers can look forward to experiencing a set of villains that are intriguing and multi-dimensional, steering clear from the cliched portrayal often found in animated features.

Director Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, renowned for their master storytelling skills, once again successfully create a fascinating world which is filled with adventure, humor, and heartwarming vignettes. Given its run-time of 67 minutes, the movie packs in enough charm and substance to leave a lasting impact.

What makes Bartok the Magnificent a real spectacle is its beautifully crafted musical sequences. Composer Stephen Flaherty teams up once again with lyricist Lynn Ahrens to create a rich score that augments the cinematic experience.
