Battle Angel
Where to Watch Battle Angel
Battle Angel, also known as Alita: Battle Angel, is a 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Yukito Kishiro’s Japanese manga series. Under the direction of Robert Rodriguez, the film was written by veteran filmmaker James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. The movie stands tall with a strong lead cast, featuring Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, and Jennifer Connelly, amongst others, who are joined by a multi-talented supporting cast. Rosa Salazar gives an appealing performance, expertly translating silent emotions through her digital avatar as Alita.
The story starts set in a bleak and dystopian future, several centuries from now. There are two societies remaining: the vibrant and progressive sky city of Zalem that floats high above, and Iron City, the decaying scrapyard metropolis on the ground below. Iron City alienates its inhabitants from the floating city above, showing the stark disparity between the poor on the ground and the rich in the sky.
In the junkyard of Iron City, Dr. Dyson Ido, brilliantly brought to life by Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, discovers the remains of a female cyborg. Realizing that her humanoid brain is still alive and cognitive, Ido, a compassionate and skilled cybernetics doctor, rebuilds her and gives her the name 'Alita,' the same name as his deceased daughter. Alita, played by Rosa Salazar, wakes up with no memory of who she is or her past. She starts a new life at Ido’s clinic, filled with curiosity about her new body and the world around her.
Jennifer Connelly plays the role of Chiren, Ido’s estranged ex-wife, who also shares a complex history with Zalem. Connelly portrays a character with ruthless ambition and an obsession with returning back to Zalem, as she nurses deep resentment for being exiled to Iron City.
The movie explores Alita's journey of self-discovery, as she navigates this complex new world with every step she takes. Among the grim cityscapes, she meets and soon falls for a roguish teenager named Hugo, portrayed by Keean Johnson. Hugo helps her learn the ropes of her new environment, opening doors to knowledge that grows her understanding of humanity, life, and love.
Battle Angel is not just about outward exploration, but Alita’s inward journey is just as significant. She grows into a fearless and tenacious warrior who accepts that there is more to her than just her state as a cyborg. As her past begins to resurface, Alita finds she possesses extraordinary combat skills that could potentially change the grim power dynamics in Iron City.
One intense part of this futuristic world is 'Motorball', a deadly high-speed sport played entirely by cyborgs. Alita’s participation in Motorball brings a whole new realm of electrifying action sequences into the film, boasting of visionary magnitude.
The film skillfully merges a dystopian narrative with state of the art visual effects. It houses cutting edge technology that brings to life the drastically enhanced characters and the decaying urban landscapes. Alita, the protagonist, is entirely a digital creation powered by Salazar's motion-capture performance. The visual effects create an astonishing, almost human-like character, with soulful eyes and intricate mechanics that breathe an uncanny realism into Alita.
Arguably more than just a visual spectacle, Battle Angel weaves an emotional story of identity and humanity. Every confrontation Alita gets into stirs deep emotional currents that perpetuate the storyline, challenging her character and defining her existence. Every action sequence is slick and gritty all at once, pulling the audience deeper into the world of Alita and her increasing complexities.
Battle Angel ends on a note that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats, gasping for more. The fast-paced narrative combined with groundbreaking visual storytelling makes the film an immersive cyberpunk experience. Battle Angel delivers remarkable world-building coupled with riveting action, carving a unique identity within the science-fiction genre. Despite the bright neon signages, and the heavy-metal cities, it's Alita's journey of self-discovery and determination that takes center stage, proving the movie has both brains and brawn.
