Bhikari is a 2017 Indian film directed by Ganesh Acharya. It's a movie characterized by its emotional depth, conveyed in the form of a beautiful narrative that is as heartwrenching as it is evocative. Starring an ensemble cast that includes Swapnil Joshi, Kirti Adarkar, and Rucha Inamdar, Bhikari tells an intimate tale of familial bonds, desperation, and the lengths to which one can go when driven to their limits by the dire circumstances of life.

The protagonist of the film is a young man named Samrat (played by Swapnil Joshi), who leads an enviable life. He is the owner of a thriving textile empire, inherited from his loving but sternly principled father. His life is filled with prosperity, lavish luxuries, and respect from societal peers. But more than all this, what lies at the very axis of Samrat's world is his relationship with his mother (played by Kirti Adarkar). She has doted on him since childhood and continues to be his sole emotional support, his confidante, and the person he cares most about in the world.

However, a fateful twist of events causes Samrat's world to spiral out of control, when his mother falls gravely ill. He is faced with the harsh reality that his mother's life is hanging on by a thin thread due to a critical medical condition that has not responded to treatment. His extraordinarily affluent life takes a sharp detour when countless medical expenses and ineffective treatments fail to improve his mother's health.

In an agony of despair and helplessness, he starts questioning his own beliefs and the effectiveness of his riches, which until now, he believed could resolve any problem. Suddenly, his prosperity seems worthless and hollow; his life becomes a manifestation of dire adversity instead of one filled with the privilege of fortune.

A ray of hope appears in the form of a mystical sage who proposes a radical solution to Samrat - become a beggar to save his mother’s life. From this point, the film takes a dramatic turn as it showcases the journey of Samrat transforming from a wealthy businessman to a beggar on the streets. It is a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and empathy. His transformation brings forth the capabilities of the human spirit, its ability to endure, and the lengths to which a son would go to save his ailing mother.

The film also stars Rucha Inamdar, who portrays the character of a kind woman who stands by Samrat's side in his dark times, adding a streak of hope and companionship in his life, while also putting a much-needed spotlight on the significance of unconditional support in human relationships.

Bhikari as a film is as much about the willpower and determination of its lead character as it is about the bitter realities of life that the less fortunate deal with daily. It offers viewers a stark contrast between the life of the haves and the have-nots, while also providing a gripping exploration of relationships and human emotions.

Ganesh Acharya does a commendable job in his directorial venture, creating a film that is visually captivating and emotionally engaging. The scenes are skillfully designed to provoke thoughts and stimulate feelings, setting the mood of the film accurately and with great depth. Swapnil Joshi renders a masterful portrayal of his character Samrat, showcasing a wide range of emotions — from affluence to despair, from determination to desperation.

The supporting cast that includes Guru Thakur, Sayaji Shinde, Milind Shinde, and others, has also done a fantastic job in bringing the story to life. An ensemble of songs by the music directors Vishal Mishra and Milind Wankhede adds a musical backdrop that enriches the cinematic experience while also supplementing the narrative progression.

Bhikari is not your typical commercial film. It stands out due to its unconventional plot, its raw and honest depiction of life and human emotions, and its compelling storytelling that is sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers. It sends out a powerful message that life’s value isn’t dictated by wealth or stature, but by relationships, empathy, and the strength of the human spirit in times of duress.
