Bio-Dome is a 1996 American comedy film directed by Jason Bloom, and starring Pauly Shore, Stephen Baldwin, and William Atherton. The film embraces an eccentric and exaggerated humorous tone while presenting a unique blend of environmental-studies hijinks and crude humor, which is characteristic of similar goofy comedy films of the '90s era.

The main lead characters Bud (Pauly Shore) and Doyle (Stephen Baldwin) are two slackers who seem to barely have their lives together. Nothing seems particularly important to this pair except the pursuit of fun, relaxation, and of course, their girlfriends Monique (Joey Lauren Adams) and Jen (Teresa Hill). However, an unexpected turn of events leads to the duo being locked inside the “Bio-Dome”, a state-of-the-art ecological experiment.

The “Bio-Dome” is a high-tech, environmentally controlled scientific research enclosure with a self-sustaining ecosystem, designed by the ultra-serious Dr. Noah Faulkner (William Atherton). The "Bio-Dome" is intended to be a completely contained environment where five scientists are meant to live for a year without any outside interaction. The scientists therein are supposed to live off of the plants and animals inside the dome, recycling everything, even waste, in order to study and develop a perfect, sustainable environment.

However, Bud and Doyle are mistakenly sealed inside this artificial environment, disrupting the experiment and the pristine, controlled setting. The pair, with their blatant disregard for the rules and the science behind the project, turn the experiment into chaos and bring the critically balanced ecosystem near to collapse. This forces a grudging Dr. Faulkner to have to find a way to cope with his unexpected guests while attempting to maintain the integrity of his experiment.

Meanwhile, Bud and Doyle must learn to adapt to their new surroundings and deal with their new reality. Their antics and comic misadventures form the crux of the film’s humor, providing audiences with an entertaining romp brimming with ridiculous situations, shallow pranks, and plenty of laughs.

As the two bumbling pals wreck havoc in the Bio-Dome, they also inadvertently stumble upon a newfound appreciation for their environment. Their careless lifestyle gradually shifts as they begin to understand the importance of respecting nature and the environment.

While the storyline primarily leans on comedy, Bio-Dome subtly tackles important thematic subjects that are increasingly pertinent even in the present age. It addresses ecological balance, responsibility, and overall progressive environmental awareness, though all presented via the film's signature bumbling humor.

The performances of Pauly Shore and Stephen Baldwin are a highlight of the film. Shore is, as always, 'The Weasel', quick with a one-liner and hardly ever taking anything seriously. Baldwin, on the other hand, complements him perfectly with his laid-back comedic style.

Noteworthy is the presence of William Atherton, who plays the frustrated scientist Dr. Faulkner in an impressive performance, giving the audience a character whose serious nature and scholarly commitment hilariously counteract the casted antics of Bud and Doyle. The ensemble supporting cast enhances the comedic polarity with an array of skillfully played off-beat, quirky, and over-the-top characters, highlighting the film’s silly humor and underlining its laid-back charm.

Visually, Bio-Dome is quite a treat. The film creatively uses its unique setting to construct a variable comedic playground filled with bright, colorful locations, giving the movie a visually distinct appearance. The zany and high-paced direction keeps the movie moving briskly, ensuring that there's seldom a dull moment within the Bio-Dome.

Bio-Dome is ultimately a product of its time, a mid-'90s comedy that seamlessly embraces over-the-top silliness, and situational comedy to offer a fun-filled, hilarious joy ride. It’s a perfect movie for those looking for a light, entertaining film that delivers laughs, well-timed comedic performances and a unique premise, all while maintaining an underlying environmental message.

Bio-Dome is a Comedy movie released in 1996. It has a runtime of 88 min. Critics and viewers have rated it mostly poor reviews, with an IMDb score of 4.4. It also holds a MetaScore of 1.
