In Blind Mountain, the Chinese filmmaker Li Yang provides a powerful and deeply disturbing depiction of the human trafficking crisis in rural China during the mid-1990s. This 2007 drama-thriller film features Lu Huang, Youan Yang, and Yuling Zhang in major roles.

The protagonist of the film is Bai Xuemei, a recent university graduate, brilliantly portrayed by Lu Huang. Xuemei's character represents an optimistic and ambitious young woman looking for opportunities to improve her financial status. After receiving a job as a medical supply saleswoman, Xuemei travels to the underprivileged northern provinces, but the seemingly harmless trip turns out to be a horrifying deception.

Degui is an uneducated, boorish farmer who has no qualms about exploiting, or even brutalizing Xuemei in order to assert his conjugal rights.

The village's headmaster, played by Zhang Yuling, who feels that he’s doing Xuemei a favor by marrying her off and providing shelter. The members of the village, the parents of Degui, and the local police, are all party to the abuse, either actively or passively, displaying an ensemble cast that brings to life the complexity and harshness of the societal structures in play.

Director Li Yang doesn’t shy away from painting an honest and heart-wrenching portrayal of human rights abuses. The film gives an impactful comment on the appalling state of the rural female population, forced to endure marital rape, perform hard labor, and cope with the absence of both law and order. Thematically, the movie underlines the stark contrast between modern urbanity and primitive rural life, making one ponder about the vast disparities within the same country.

Blind Mountain utilizes the picturesque natural element of the northern Chinese province as a juxtaposing backdrop to the grim plot.
