Broken

Broken is an intriguing British drama released in 2012 starring eminent actors like Tim Roth, Charlie Booty, and Lily James. Directed by Rufus Norris, this film is an adaptation of Daniel Clay's novel from 2008, which is, in turn, a contemporary reimagining of Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' The story of Broken primarily revolves around three individual households that reside in a particular North London suburban cul-de-sac. Charlie Booty portrays the character Rick, who is a sweet-natured, vulnerable and mentally-challenged youth living next-door, still under the care of his caring parents, both of whom are too old to be keeping up with their son. Unfortunately, Rick becomes the scapegoat and is wrongfully blamed for the supposed rape of a local girl, which was just a benign misunderstanding. This incident sparks a sequence of events that has implications on everyone living in the vicinity.

Moreover, Lily James plays the role of older sister to Saskia, the supposed victim of the rape. As a teenager who eloped from the strict custody of her father Bob, played by Rory Kinnear, Saskia is often reprimanded by her father for her rebellious nature. Bob is an edgy character in himself. Being a widower and father of three unruly, sassy daughters, he has a maniacal reflex to protect his family, which inadvertently leads to violence and chaos in the community.

Given the constant turbulent interference from the OCD father and aggressive daughters living nearby, Skunk's life is far from ordinary. She deals not only with the myriad complexities of adolescence but also encounters and tries to make sense of the violence and hostility around her, realities far beyond her age. As she begins to comprehend the world outside her idealistic bubble, her interactions with Rick, her first prepubescent boyfriend Dillon, and her eccentric neighborhood, form the major part of the film’s narrative.

One salient feature of Broken is its ability to portray stark realism, reflecting on the cataclysms of everyday life in an ordinary suburban neighborhood.
