Set within the backdrop of World War II, Churchill, a historical biopic released in 2017, paints a poignant picture of the iconic British leader Sir Winston Churchill. Across from him, Miranda Richardson delivers a riveting performance as Clementine Churchill, the steadfast wife and confidante who supports her husband amid his personal crisis. A cipher in other films about the leader, Clementine is assertive and commanding here, as much Churchill's partner as his sustainer, deftly portrayed by Richardson.

John Slattery, best known for his role in Mad Men, portrays General Eisenhower — a strategic and analytical man who must negotiate his plan with Churchill. His Eisenhower is less flamboyant than other incarnations, but crucial to the narrative, a thoughtful representation of a man caught between respect for a legend and the realities of war.

Churchill delves deep into the controversial and intricate layers of the historic figure, portraying him not as a flawless hero, but as a human grappling with the enormity of his responsibilities. The film focuses on the four pivotal days leading up to the Allied forces’ momentous invasion of Normandy Beach, better known as D-Day. Here, Churchill is hesitant and filled with foreboding. He opposes the operation on account of his traumatic experiences during the World War I Dardanelles campaign, which resulted in a disastrous loss.

As the days to the D-Day invasion inch closer, he becomes a lone voice of dissent within the English government, which is otherwise united in its decision to go ahead with the operation. Tensions rise and emotions crackle as Churchill, referred to derisively by some as the 'British Bulldog', struggles to reconcile with his haunting past while veering a bruised nation towards victory.

The film beautifully captures Churchill’s vocal eloquence - his speeches are the beating heart of this film, his fiery rhetoric a source of inspiration for his troops. Yet, it also showcases the silent non-verbal gestures, the internalised moments of crises, and lingering looks that evoke an intense empathy for the man.

Teplitzky’s direction is confident and artistic, presenting a visual feast alongside a compelling narrative. He applies an intriguing palette of colour, some scenes filled with a warm glow, others stark and cold, mirroring Churchill's internal conflict. The cinematography by David Higgs adds to the overall dramatic tone, from panoramic views of England’s coastline to the close-ups that tell different stories through their detail, keeping the audience visually engaged.

Alex von Tunzelmann’s screenplay is crisp and to the point, making room for vulnerability amid the more public façade of power. It crisscrosses between political narrative and personal dilemmas, offering an exploration of Churchill’s mind, the fears that force him into inactivity, and the strong individuals around him who help him overcome his demons.

While the film does not shy away from displaying Churchill's drawbacks and controversial choices, it also remains faithful to his reputation as a steadfast leader determined to resist tyranny. Saint, sinner, or both, this film is a study of resilience.

Churchill, as portrayed in this film, is a character on the brink of defeat, and yet, he’s a timeless symbol of persevering through adversity. His weaknesses presented in the film make the strength he is known for even more admirable. This isn't a simplistic, glorified portrayal of an historic giant, but rather, the humanising and deconstructing of a man under the immense weight of world history.

It is a poignant exploration into the life of a man who arguably shaped the course of Western civilization, exhibiting the vulnerabilities, doubts and fears even great leaders face and overcome.
