Devastated buildings and grimly enslaved humans make for a dread-laden mise-en-scene. In this drab, future version of London, the human race is either ruled and brainwashed by Robo-man helmets or used as a slave labor force. The logistics of how the Daleks' control mechanisms work aren't overly explained, which adds to the eerie dystopian feel of the film.

While humans had previously been aware of the Daleks through interactions in the earlier Dr. Who movie, the film quickly established that the human resistance movement has adapted to the apocalyptic setting. The narrative dives deep into the existential fear of an enslaved Earth and horror associated with having to live subservient to the Daleks.

Ray Brooks played David, the committed and embittered leader of the rebels, who refuses to accept the subjugation and is determined to wage an unremitting war against the Daleks. Alongside a band of human survivors, they continually try to stop the horrid creatures and their invasion plan.

Despite being a dystopian sci-fi movie, the vivid production, imaginative storyline and determined human spirit maintained throughout the film lend a sense of comfort, familiarity, and optimism. Moreover, the special effects -- from the grimly post-apocalyptic depiction of London to the innovative Dalek designs -- are appreciably good for their time.

Composer Malcolm Lockyer's dramatic music adds an air of menace and urgency to the visual terror created by the Earth's devastation and Dalek threat. Gorgeous cinematography by John Wilcox renders an evocative landscape of destruction while making the Daleks ever menacing.
