Disney’s 2018 movie musical, ZOMBIES, is a dynamic blend of comedy, romance, and, most surprisingly, zombies. Following in the footsteps of High School Musical and Descendants, ZOMBIES combines catchy songs and intricate dance routines to tell an endearing story about acceptance, friendship, and the societal struggle between differents groups coming together.

The story takes place in the American suburban town of Seabrook, a location characterized by cheerfulness, normalcy, and a profound love for cheerleading. However, its idyllic façade hides an extraordinary secret: half a century ago, a nuclear power plant accident struck the town, resulting in the creation of a strange green gas that turned half the residents into brain-eating zombies. To subdue the zombies and avoid chaos, modern technology was used to manufacture Z-Bands, wrist gadgets producing soothing electromagnetic pulses to keep the hunger for human brains at bay.

Consequently, Seabrook's society split into two distinctive sections - the normal human part, filled with technicolored homes and landscaped lawns, and Zombietown, a dilapidated, graffiti-splattered corner where the zombies live. These two worlds have coexisted peacefully, though separately, with a major wall deterring any interaction.

The narrative begins when a government order brings down this huge wall, allowing the zombies to enroll at Seabrook High School. The arrival of the zombie students shakes the world of the conformist human students, triggering suspicion, unease, and some degree of fear.

The plot primarily revolves around two charming main characters: Zed (Milo Manheim) and Addison (Meg Donnelly). Zed, a fun-loving, optimistic zombie teenager, dreams of becoming Seabrook High's first zombie football player, optimistic that this will lead to better integration between humans and zombies. On the other hand, Addison is a bubbly, warm sophomore and aspiring cheerleader who, unlike her judgmental classmates, is excited about the zombies joining their school, believing that acceptance and diversity are essential for a harmonious society.

Zed and Addison encounter each other amidst the school chaos, consequently sowing the seeds of a budding romance. Their romance, however, is a forbidden one, stirring up controversy within the already tense community. The two teenagers go through trials and learn life-altering lessons as they strive for acceptance among their peers and within themselves.

Adding spice to the narrative is Zed's sassy and adventurous younger sister Zoey (Kingston Foster), and their loyal zombie friend Eliza (Kylee Russell), who advocates for zombie rights and believes in fighting against their unfair treatment.

In opposition, the human side presents Bucky (Trevor Tordjman) as the self-absorbed, popular cheer captain and cousin of Addison who is less than thrilled about the Zombietown integration. His stereotypical cheer squad followers mirror his sentiments, adding high-school drama into the mix.

Disney's ZOMBIES is a tale stitched together with an electrifying soundtrack and dance sequences in a palette that combines human cheerleading with zombie hip-hop, reflectively altering the tones and styles of human and zombie worlds. It masterfully conveys a heartfelt and earnest narrative about prejudice, unity, and the need to embrace our differences rather than fear them.

Director Paul Hoen delivers a movie that entertainingly amalgamates typical teenage high school concerns, such as fitting in and first love, with its broader social themes of tolerance and inclusivity. This energetic, infectious musical, coupled with a robust ensemble cast, is sure to keep its viewers engaged, entertained, and dancing along.

The diverse characters, the humorous script, the globally relevant themes, and a resonating message of acceptance are cleverly presented, ensuring ZOMBIES to be a gratifying watch for both the young and the young-at-heart.
