Don't Open The Door

Set in the heart of Texas, Don't Open The Door is a 1974 American independent horror film directed by S.F. Brownrigg. It stars Susan Bracken, Larry O'Dwyer, and Gene Ross and is an intriguing spin on a classic style of psychological thrills, suspense, and horror.

Don't Open The Door begins with the lead character, Amanda Post portrayed by Susan Bracken, receiving an urgent message from her grandmother's housekeeper in her small hometown of Victoria. Despite the pleas of her boyfriend and doctor not to leave, she is compelled by the duty of family love and concern to return back home.

Larry O'Dwyer and Gene Ross also put forth chilling performances, both intriguing and bewildering.

Director S.F. Brownrigg's touch is particularly apparent in the film's use of suspense building as he pulls the fan into Amanda's world, filled with tension and an eerie sense of foreboding. The manipulation of lighting, sound effects, and choice of camera angles in comeback with a minimalistic score, effectively heightens the horror without relying on excessive amounts of gore or violence.

Don't Open The Door takes the traditional aspects of Southern Gothic horror, packed with suspense, mystery, and the hint of macabre, and blends them with the psychological thriller aspect that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat throughout its running time. Despite the constraints of a low budget, the film succeeds in leaving an emotional impact and a haunting resonance long after it finishes.
