Dragon Wasps

In 2012, director Joe Knee brought us the thrilling, action-packed creature feature film, "Dragon Wasps". The film displays a unique blend of science fiction, adventure and horror genres, while successfully combining the themes of human survival and dangerous, undiscovered species. Despite stepping into a world that is commonly filled with films centred around giant monsters, "Dragon Wasps" stands out for its intriguing premise and convincingly dangerous antagonists.

The narrative follows the courageous adventures of entomologist Gina Humphries, played by the talented Dominika Juillet, a woman determined to locate her missing father in the Belizean jungle. Gina's father, a world-renowned scientist, vanishes whilst embarked on his scientific endeavours, leaving her in the dark about his fate. Compelled by her determination and her love for her father, Gina, along with her colleague Rhonda Guiterrez (Nikolette Noel), embarks on a dangerous mission to locate and rescue him.

The expedition takes a dramatic turn when they find themselves directly in the path of a colony of genetically modified, deadly giant wasps which emit flames. These wasps, referred to as "Dragon Wasps" in the course of the narrative, are the secret military experiments of the American government, shed in a rather nefarious and ominous light in the film. Their terrifying presence in the Belizean jungle poses a grave threat to the survival of Gina, Rhonda and the group of military soldiers that join their rescue mission.

In an unexpected twist, the lead character, Gina, manages to use the Dragon Wasps’ pheromones as a tool to track her father’s location in the dense foliage. Simultaneously, the pheromones attract these fearful creatures which lead to the thrilling sequences of deadly combat and ingenious survival strategies.

Corin Nemec, well-known for his role in the popular series "Stargate SG-1", plays the role of John Hammond, the commanding officer of the military squad that Gina and Rhonda meet in the jungle. Nemec’s strong performance brings life to the character of a war-wearied yet heroic leader who is willing to risk his life for the safety of his squad and to aid Gina and Rhonda in their mission. The dynamic of the team changes throughout the movie along with their struggles and shared experiences, which add dimension and depth to this adventure story.

Incorporating good practical effects, "Dragon Wasps" boasts an array of fiery battles against monstrous insects, dangerous jungle creatures, and treacherous military insurgents. Considering it's a lower budget film, the visual effects and giant wasp designs are well-executed and convincing. The interplay of shadows and darkness in the green expanse of the jungle adds an element of suspense and fear, effectively enhancing the overall cinematic experience.

Despite being a horror-adventure film, "Dragon Wasps" does not shy away from occasional threads of humour and character-driven dialogue, which serve to lighten the intense mood. Moments of quick wit and banter are perfectly inserted to counterbalance the sense of looming danger and highlight the rapport between the characters.

"Dragon Wasps" is not just a movie about survival in the face of monstrous creatures; it's a tale about challenging the limitations of science and the ethical boundaries of human intervention with natural habitats. It showcases the triumphs, failures, and sacrifices that come with pushing the conventional boundaries of scientific research.
