The movie seamlessly weaves the genres of mystery and treasure hunt with family drama. It carries forward the legacy of its predecessor while also introducing fresh, fascinating elements, ensuring a dose of nostalgia alongside a completely new, gripping narrative.
Durgeshgorer Guptodhon starts with the history professor Subarna Sen, or 'Sona da,' portrayed by Abir Chatterjee, returning to Kolkata from Oxford. Together with Abir (Arjun Chakrabarty) and Jhinuk (Ishaa Saha) who were his students at Oxford, Sona da plans to spend the summer holidays at his family residence in his ancestral village of Durgeshgor, West Bengal.
However, the adventure begins when their journey to Durgeshgor becomes a voyage of discoveries upon learning about a historical treasure supposedly hidden in the village’s old Durga temple. Sona da, an experienced decipherer of encrypted clues and symbols, quickly deciphers the clues leading to the treasure hidden by an ancestor of the Chowdhury family, the Zamindars of Durgeshgor.
The three protagonists find themselves embroiled in solving a riddle shrouded in the verses of a poem, narrating the story of the treasures hidden underneath Durgeshgor’s temple. As they wrestle with each layer of the mystery and navigate through a labyrinth of clues, their journey spirals into a blend of thrill, drama, and suspense.
Director Dhrubo Banerjee seamlessly incorporates well-researched historical elements within the plot that makes the narrative intriguing. Spiritual beliefs, cultural practices, and old-fashioned values add to the depth of the script. The film's treatment of the search for the treasure, complete with a key and map, beautifully portrays the charm of a rustic lifestyle.
The urban-rural contrast has been handled gracefully in Durgeshgorer Guptodhon. The village scenes are much more than just a backdrop; the local people, their dialects, customs, and their warm receptions paint a vivid picture, organically fitting into the narrative and making it much more relatable and believable for the audience.
Abir Chatterjee, reprising his role as Sona da, delivers an exceptional performance that becomes the bedrock of the movie. Chatterjee captures the essence of his character exquisitely, maintaining the charm of a know-it-all professor throughout the film.
Arjun Chakrabarty, as the younger protagonist Abir, grows in his character, skillfully showcasing his intelligence and courage stint. Ishaa Saha, playing the character of Jhinuk, evolves throughout the story, negotiating through the complex emotions her character undergoes, while also playing an essential part in the team's journey to find the treasure.
The film's cast also includes Kharaj Mukherjee, Arindam Sil, and Anindya Chatterjee, who play significant roles that contribute to the movie's suspense and accelerate the adventure quotient. The film, shot brilliantly capturing the rural landscapes, also boasts of a heart-touching soundtrack that festoons the narrative brilliantly.
