Fletch Lives

Fletch Lives, released in 1989, is a hilarious follow-up to the successful film Fletch. While it remains true to the screwball humor and investigatory intrigue found in the original movie, Fletch Lives takes the series in a new direction, placing larger-than-life protagonist Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher in the heart of southern eccentricity.

This comedy, directed by Michael Ritchie, features Chevy Chase, who returns triumphantly to reprise his role as the quick-witted Los Angeles Times reporter, Fletch. As charismatic as ever, Chase imbues the character with charm and humor as he finds himself entangled in more outlandish escapades. Fresh off his adventures from the first film, Fletch is met with an intriguing realization: he has inherited a decrepit mansion in Louisiana from a deceased aunt.

Upon his arrival, Fletch discovers that his inherited estate, Bell Isle, isn't what he expected. Instead of the promised grandeur, he is faced with an unkempt, derelict mansion with a murky past, teetering on the brink of collapse. Already questioning his decision to relocate, Fletch's life is thrown into chaos when a sultry woman shows up on his doorstep, and is found murdered the next day.

Fletch then finds himself in the crosshairs of a crafty local attorney, Hamilton Johnson, played by Hal Holbrook. Johnson is a man of power and influence, and has his sights set on Bell Isle. Contrary to Fletch's original plan for a less complicated life, he's thrown headfirst into another multi-layered mystery that he must unravel.

The film shines in its supporting cast as well. Julianne Phillips plays Becky Culpepper, a real estate agent in the small Louisiana town, who adds a romance element to the story and aids Fletch in his investigation. The film also introduces an array of colorful southern characters, such as R. Lee Ermey playing TV evangelist Jimmy Lee Farnsworth, depicting the fundamentalism prevalent in the late ‘80s. Other key performances from Richard Libertini, Cleavon Little, and Patricia Kalember amplify the eccentricity and charm of this southern caper.

On the visual front, Fletch Lives makes excellent use of the striking Louisiana backdrop. The swamps, plantation houses, and local towns are filmed in such a way that they become characters in their own right, adding atmosphere and authenticity to the narrative. The grandeur and eeriness of the dilapidated mansion play a pivotal role in enhancing the comedic suspense.

With Fletch Lives, Chevy Chase further solidifies his chameleon-like abilities as an actor.
