Drury does a commendable job in the direction of the movie, ensuring viewers, feel both the claustrophobia and the terror experienced by the submarine’s crew. The cinematography works best in illustrating the harsh potential of a nuclear disaster, while also focusing on the personal dilemmas and sacrifices of the characters on screen.

However, it is not all gloom and doom. Despite painting a chilling image of a potential nuclear disaster, Hostile Waters also delves into the themes of heroism, human endeavor and survival instinct, resilience, and the underlying desire for peace amongst those who are genuinely at the helm of war.

The film’s score by Richard Hartley is judiciously utilized to increase tension and offer a somber reflection when the script calls for it. The use of sound effects and silence in equally measured amounts is powerfully cinematic, leading to heart-stopping suspense.

Hostile Waters is an effective blend of spectacular performances, detailed storytelling, and emotional depth. Based on a potent real-life event and curated with cinematic perfection, this is a submarine movie that sails beyond its genre to delve deep into the abyss of international politics, warfare, and the enduring human spirit.
