Huckleberry

Huckleberry is an independent drama-thriller film that was released in 2018. Not to be confused with the iconic novels about Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, this movie tells an entirely different story based in the modern world. The film, directed by Roger Hill, shines a light on the unspoken abuses of power, classism, and gender dynamics that ripple through society. The tale begins in the late 90’s in a small Midwestern town, portraying an adolescent Huckleberry Finn, played by Daniel Fisher-Golden. Huckleberry, known as Huck, is a non-binary transgender adolescent in the small town who lives with societal and personal questions hanging above his head. Fisher-Golden carries the film on his small shoulders with exceptional grace, reflecting the confusion and frustration of an adolescent who is not only confronted with societal norms but also a brewing storm in his personal life.

The plot thickens as Jolene, Huck's spirited love interest, is introduced. Sarah Ulstrup delivers a commendable portrayal of Jolene, a young woman trapped in an abusive relationship. The palpable chemistry between Huck and Jolene extends beyond their romantic attraction, making it clear that Huck seeks to protect Jolene even if it involves risking his own life and disrupting the conservative ethos of the town.

The antagonist of the story is Cliff, portrayed by Jahking Guillory of "Kicks" fame. Guillory delivers a chilling portrayal of a controlling, abusive boyfriend whose age and cocky demeanor lead him to underestimate Huck's determination. Guillory’s impressive acting brings out Cliff's hostility and villainous behavior.
