Where to Watch In Ghost House Inn

2010

In Ghost House Inn is a sparkling 2010 Malayalam horror-comedy film which was directed by Lal and produced by 'P N Venugopal.' The film predominantly stars Mukesh, Siddique, and Jagadish, along with other highly talented actors like Ashokan, Rohini, Laksmipriya, and others. It's the third installment in the immensely popular 'In Harihar Nagar' series, following up on the successes of 2 Harihar Nagar (2009) and In Harihar Nagar (1990).

The story revolves around the characters Mahadevan (played by Mukesh), Govindan Kutty (Siddique), Appukuttan (Jagadish), and Thomas Kutty (Ashokan). These are four long-time friends who, after the successes and adventures of their previous two ventures, now decide to purchase a bungalow in Ooty with the money they've acquired from lucky lottery winnings. The bungalow, which they are able to purchase at a bargain price, intrigues them with its mysteriously low price and beautiful location. Deceivingly charming in appearance, the bungalow has a grotesque aspect to it which the friends have yet to discover - it's haunted.

As they explore and settle into the beautiful bungalow named 'Glendale,' they start experiencing strange and uncanny events. The abode is enveloped with a spooky chill, the echo of strange noises, and the occurrence of bizarre incidents, all of which set the alarm bells ringing for the friends. However, their skepticism fades into trepidation as they can no longer deny the eerie phenomena as mere coincidences.

They encounter a spirit, played by Radhika, and her backstory slowly begins to unfurl. As they untangle the bungalow's dark past, they are faced with the spine-chilling challenges and genuine scares that pepper the otherwise light-hearted narrative with chilling drops of horror. They encounter a swindling priest-turned-exorcist (played by Nedumudi Venu) who further adds hilarious twists to the horror.

In terms of the cast's performances, Mukesh, Siddique, Ashokan, and Jagadish once again bring their characters to life, creating a bond with the audience. Their effortless comic timing, delivery of witticisms, and convincing portrayals of fear give an edgy and compelling take on their characters. There's a natural ease in their camaraderie, making their friendship genuinely believable and the sequences engagingly authentic.

Radhika, in her role as the spirit, successfully infuses anxiety and fear in the narrative with her performance. Nedumudi Venu, as the comical exorcist, contributes hugely to the fun element in the film. His comic yet believable portrayal of the character brings in rich humor and laughter, effortlessly merging with the scary undertones without disturbing the thriller's pacing.

The narrative style adopted by the director, Lal, warrants appropriate praise as it superbly balances horror and comedy. The director’s success in blending these distinct genres into a cohesive and engaging narrative stands as a testament to his creative vision and cinematic expertise. The rib-tickling comedy punch lines along with real horror occasions keep the audience on their toes and glued to the screen throughout the movie.

The filmmakers' technical competence is also apparent in the film's cinematography. Venu has done an exceptional job of capturing the quiet charm and eerie stillness of the hill station and the haunted bungalow. The sound design helped build suspense and thrill, enhancing the overall film-watching experience.

In all, In Ghost House Inn, does not disappoint and provides a fresh air in Malayalam cinema. It utilizes elements of horror, suspense, and comedy, interspersed with an intricate storyline, excellent cast performances and commendable direction, to create a sleekly enjoyable film that is worth the audience's time and attention. Despite the scary banner, it maintains a hearty humor throughout its run-time which makes it a family-friendly, fun-filled horror-comedy with spine-chilling moments and hilarious scenes running alongside each other. It's a movie that pleases the light-hearted, tickles the funny bone, and gives the thrill seekers a good scare.
