Kaliyattam

Kaliyattam, a critically acclaimed 1997 Malayalam film, is essentially a cinematic interpretation of one of Shakespeare's most recognized tragedies, 'Othello.' Adapted and contemporized by director Jayaraj, the film finds a fresh cultural context within the traditional art forms of Kerala, India. Opposite Suresh Gopi is Manju Warrier, who plays the role of Thamara, Perumalayan's lover, brilliantly. She is the equivalent of Desdemona from the original play. Thamara is a privileged upper-caste woman who falls in love with Perumalayan irrespective of the caste, social, and cultural barriers standing between them. Their love story, thus, is an outcast from their community standards, bearing stark contrast to their surroundings. Her defiance and determination to love and be with Perumalayan set up a stage primed for conflict and tension.

The facades of trust, manipulation, deceit, and jealousy profoundly layers the narrative skeleton of Kaliyattam. Lal, known for his versatile acting talents, plays the devious equivalent of Iago from the Shakespearean play, named 'Kanalan.' With poison-tipped words and treachery, Lal's character is a manipulator playing on the insecurities and fears of Perumalayan, stoking the fires of jealousy and distrust. The movie builds on this dynamic, focusing on the complex interplay of trust and jealousy, love and hate, loyalty and secrecy.
