Karate Girl

Karate Girl is a thrilling Japanese martial arts film released in 2011, directed by Yoshikatsu Kimura. The movie features Rina Takeda as the main character Ayaka Kurenai, alongside Hina Tobimatsu as her younger sister Natsuki Kurenai, and Tatsuya Naka as the antagonist, Tagajô Kazuma.

Despite her interests being primarily centered on martial arts, Ayaka also leads an engaging life of dealing with normal high school life chock full of friendship, teen woes and life lessons.

Takeda delivers a compelling performance channeling a strong, gracefully aggressive swagger to Ayaka, focusing on the essence of Karate- not just as a martial arts form, but as an elemental force that has the potential to shape one's life.

On the other side, we are introduced to Natsuki Kurenai, the younger sister, portrayed incredibly by Hina Tobimatsu. Unlike Ayaka, Natsuki grows up in the inviting surrounds of Tagajô's home, oblivious to the hard fact that the man she has known all her life as a father figure is the same antagonist who caused her family's ruination. We see her character firmly grounded in the areas of rich human emotions where she is torn between her loyalty towards her adopted family and the truth about her lineage.

Tatsuya Naka’s portrayal as Tagajô Kazuma is awe-inspiring and bold. His character is well-developed, offering the perfect contrast of a villain you want to vehemently dislike yet cannot fully hate due to the well-written past and his complex relationship with the protagonist.
