King of Thorn is a 2009 Japanese animated science fiction thriller film directed by Kazuyoshi Katayama and produced by Sunrise, a renowned animation studio in Tokyo. The critically acclaimed voice acting cast comprises Kana Hanazawa, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Eri Sendai, and many others. This film is based on the manga series by Yuji Iwahara, which brings an intriguing fusion of sci-fi and horror to the anime world.

King of Thorn sets its stage amidst a global pandemic caused by a deadly virus called Medusa, named after the mythical Greek creature whose gaze turned people into stone. True to its intimidating name, Medusa directly targets people's genetic code, very progressively and systematically causing their bodies to harden and eventually turn to stone. The worldwide escalation of Medusa's lethal affair forces the desperate quest for a solution, and a secretive pharmaceutical company called Venus Gate steps in with a supposedly promising resolution. They contest to put a select group of 160 individuals into a cold sleep, essentially freezing their bodies until a cure for the virus is discovered.

The movie centers around seven of these individuals, each with their unique backgrounds and personalities. Among the select group is our protagonist, Kasumi Ishiki, voiced by Kana Hanazawa, whose twin sister is also infected with the virus but is not among the chosen ones, intriguingly setting Kasumi's emotional stage. Alongside her, there are other fascinating characters, including Marco Owen, a British soldier in the past, voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa, and Katherine Turner, a secret U.S. intelligence agent, voiced by Eri Sendai.

After a seemingly indeterminate period in a cryogenic sleep, the individuals wake up, only to find the scientific research facility where they were placed in a state of utter decay. The facility is plagued by thorny vines covering the entirety of the structure and grotesque, threatening creatures that are far from anything they've seen before, making Madusa look benign in comparison. Hence, the facility that was supposed to be their temporary refuge has turned into a convoluted maze of dangers and uncertainties.

Despite the hostile and unexpected circumstances, the group must band together to make their way out, facing various challenges on their escape route. As they attempt to navigate through and understand the madness surrounding them, they stumble upon the hidden dark circumstances of Venus Gate and unravel shared secrets, which add another layer of conflict within the group.
