Where to Watch Mystery Science Theater 3000: Cave Dwellers
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Cave Dwellers is one of the numerous instalments of the wildly popular MST3K franchise. Released in 1991, this outing sees series regulars Trace Beaulieu, Joel Hodgson, and Jim Mallon once again embrace their roles in the light-hearted, humor-infused, adventurous escapade. Unlike a traditional movie, Mystery Science Theater 3000 combines a feature-length film with the antics of a witty crew of characters who riff on and react to the action on the screen.
Produced by Jim Mallon, Cave Dwellers begins in the bowels of space where the hapless Joel Robinson (Joel Hodgson) is marooned aboard the Satellite of Love under the command of the dastardly Dr. Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieu). As part of an experiment, Dr. Forrester subjects Joel and his ragtag team of self-aware robots – Crow T. Robot, Tom Servo, and Gypsy – to some of the cheesiest, most cringe-worthy B-movies in cinematic history. The objective? Seeing what kind of psychological wear and tear these films will cause.
However, Joel and his bots manage to keep their spirits high and sanity intact. How do they do this? By providing hilarious commentary throughout the movie they are forced to watch, of course! Their humorous quips, running commentary, and sarcastic comebacks provide the chief charm of the MST3K series, turning potentially painful viewing experiences into laugh riots.
In this particular episode, our satellite-bound heroes are forced to endure "Cave Dwellers," a low-budget, sword-and-sorcery movie that's a sequel to "Ator, the Fighting Eagle". The adventure film is chock-full of plot-holes, laughable dialogue, and questionable special effects, all mish-mashed into a story about a muscular hero's quest to save a knowledgeable sage from the clutches of an evil villain. What could have been a yawn-inducing fantasy flick is transformed into a comedic feast thanks to the barbed bon mots and quick wit of Joel and his robotic companions.
Even as the onscreen warriors wear fur bikinis, swing swords, and fly hang gliders, the outlandish cast of MST3K wring every potential drop of humour out of the film. As the film unspools its cliché-ridden plot, Joel, Crow, and Tom never miss a beat, mining the dialogue, costumes, and even the set design for comedy gold. Not only that, but interspersed throughout the film are live-action vignettes that take place aboard the Satellite of Love, which help to further contextualize the narrative against their comical backdrop.
Trace Beaulieu is in fine form as Dr. Forrester, continuing to revel in his role as the campy, maniacal scientist. Hodgson portrays the everyman character Joel with ease, creating a character with whom the audience can easily identify and root for. Rounding out the ensemble are Kevin Murphy as the voice of Tom Servo and Trace Beaulieu pulling double duty as Crow T. Robot. Their snappy banter and comedic timing adds levity to already ridiculous scenes.
The charm of Mystery Science Theater 3000: Cave Dwellers lies in its simplicity—it’s effectively a riff-track laid over the top of an existing exploitative genre movie. The show brilliantly exaggerates the bad qualities of the film until they transform into something undeniably entertaining. It’s a perfect representation of MST3K's unique charm: making the unwatchable, watchable.
Come aboard the Satellite of Love and get ready to laugh your sides off. Whether or not you're already a fan of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 series, there's so much to love about "Cave Dwellers". This combination of low-budget cinema and high-brow humour is a must-see for lovers of comedy and cheesy movies alike. Light-hearted, irreverent, and riotously funny, Cave Dwellers is the perfect illustration of MST3K's comedic prowess and dedication to celebrating (and skewering) the world of B-movies. Enjoy the ride!
