Nikaah is an Indian Urdu film released in 1982. Directed by B.R. Chopra, the film features a star-studded cast led by Raj Babbar, Deepak Parashar, and Salma Agha in their most memorable performances. The movie also starred Asrani Govardhan, in a supporting role. The film elucidates the delicate subject of marriage and divorce in the Islamic community, treading on the thin line of drama, romance, and social commentary.

The film revolves around the life of the beautiful and talented Niloufer, played by Salma Agha, who is torn between two men who love her deeply. While studying in college, Niloufer, a modern Muslim girl, is romantically involved with Wasim Ahmed, a well-to-do and successful publisher played by Raj Babbar. Their love seems strong and enduring, and everything seems perfect in their lives when they decide to cement their love with the bond of marriage, or 'Nikaah'.

However, life seems to have a different plan for the young couple. After marriage, Wasim's obsession with his work gets the better of him, leading to turmoil and tension in their relationship. Misunderstandings breed, saturating their lives with discontentment and arguments. The precipice is reached when one day, in a fit of rage and frustration, Wasim, pronounces 'Talaq' (Islamic ritualistic divorce) to Niloufer, thereby severing the bonds of their marriage.

Life takes a dramatic turn for Niloufer, who finds solace and support in the company of Haider, an old college friend and a well-established poet, portrayed by Deepak Parashar. As Haider’s care and affection help her heal her emotional scars and rekindle her zest for life, he proposes marriage, to which a hesitant Niloufer eventually agrees. Just when Niloufer tries to move on, life presents her past back to her. Wasim, having realized his mistake, returns to claim his right to Niloufer, expressing his desire for 'Halala' (an Islamic law where a divorced woman can remarry her first husband only if she marries another man and that marriage subsequently ends by divorce or widowhood).

The plot thickens as the film presents a twisted love triangle with Niloufer at its center. Amidst the societal pressure, Niloufer is forced to question her future and her beliefs: Is marriage an institution meant to play with the lives of individuals or is it a sacred bond that should be revered and maintained with the utmost care and understanding?

The film presents a compelling plot backed by brilliant performances that hook its audience until the very end. The beautiful portrayal of the lead characters by the cast extracts an array of emotions from the audience, making them feel the pain, love, and dilemmas that the characters undergo.

Nikaah is further enhanced by its soulful and melodious music, composed by Ravi. The music blends perfectly with the film’s theme, thereby intensifying the emotions portrayed on the screen. The film received a positive response from the critics and the audience for its thoughtful story, brilliant performances, and a strong socio-cultural message.

In conclusion, Nikaah, beyond being just a film, is a thought-provoking social commentary on the sanctity of marriage, the harrowing repercussions of divorce, and the impact of societal norms and pressures on individual's lives. It provides its audience not just a dramatic tale of love and loss, but also a glimpse into marriage's nuances, divorce, and the controversial issue of 'Halala' within the Islamic community. Nikaah is a timeless tale woven with emotions, cultural nuances, and a powerful message that resonates, making it a must-watch for all cinema lovers.
