Where to Watch Overtime

2011

Overtime is an action-comedy movie released in 2011 that cleverly combines humor, thrills, and a shot of science fiction to create an entertaining and memorable cinematic experience. The film showcases wrestling legend Al Snow's acting skills, placing him in a role unlike any he's portrayed before. Furthermore, the cast is amplified by the performances of John Wells and Sebrina Scott and an impressive array of supporting actors that add depth and color to the story.

Set in the city of Louisville, Kentucky, the story revolves around Raph (Al Snow), a hardened yet likable hitman who works for an eccentric crime boss. He's known for his exceptional talent for getting the job done without a fuss. But like everyone else, Raph has bills to pay and mouths to feed. In his case, it's his young, adorable son Toby (Andrew Comstock), an eloquent and wise though naive little boy who looks up to his father, oblivious to his violent and perilous job.

Also living his double life is Raph's partner, Max (John Wells), a quick-thinking individual who manages to lighten up grim situations with his witty jokes and easygoing nature. Together, Raph and Max's dynamic presents engaging comic relief against the backdrop of their often dark line of work, making them popular among the audience.

On the surface, the movie walks you through the life of Raph attempting to juggle his roles as a single father and skilled hitman. The story takes an unexpected twist when Raph and Max are assigned to carry out what sounds like a straightforward mission on a day that ends up anything but ordinary. Their job ironically falls on the same day as Toby's birthday and all Raph wishes for is his uncomplicated assignment ends quickly so he can return and celebrate with his son.

This seemingly run-of-the-mill movie takes on a whole new dimension when the hitmen are forced to confront a complication they have never faced before. Here, director and writer Matt Niehoff carefully blends elements of science fiction into the established crime and family drama, introducing a threat that is far from human. However, his deft use of humor never lets the audience forget that they're watching an enjoyable, light-hearted film despite the high-stakes dilemma the protagonists find themselves in.

While the film can certainly be praised for its entertaining plot and script, Snow's performance, in particular, is to be commended. Accustomed to being the "bad guy" in the wrestling ring, in Overtime, he has powerfully portrayed the role of a loving single father, juggling it with his day role as a ruthless hitman. His scenes with Comstock, who plays Toby, are both heartwarming and comical, proving Snow's versatility as an actor. On the other hand, Wells admirably fulfills his part as the comic relief, keeping audiences entertained and engaged throughout the film.

The female lead Sebrina Scott marvelously portrays multiple roles as she is thrown into the perplexing world of Raph's profession. Commencing as an ordinary office worker, she is unwittingly pulled into a frightening situation she would have never imagined. Her chemistry with Snow is spot-on, making their growing bond and teamwork believable and compelling.

On the whole, Overtime is a highly entertaining ride, filled with ample laughter, moments of suspense, and just the right sprinkle of science fiction. It highlights the struggles of a single father striving to provide for his son while being pulled into another unpredictable roller coaster ride by his unique profession. Snow and Wells' performances excellently balance the humor and action of the film, allowing the audience to relate to their characters' complexity and humanity even in the bizarre circumstances they find themselves in. Ejecftly combining genres and tonal shifts, this film is an exemplar in the world of independent cinema. Not to be overlooked, Overtime is a unique and thrilling experience that should not be missed.
