Pelo Malo

His obsession with straightening his messy hair and looking 'good' for his school picture snapshot becomes a metaphor for his aspirations to climb out of his socio-economic conditions. But it also becomes a source of conflict with his mother, who is grappling with suspicions that her son may not conform to traditional gender roles.

Marta, a recently widowed unemployed woman, struggles not only to get a job to support her family but also to understand her son's behavior and obsessions. Beto Benites plays the grandfather, and his character symbolizes the traditional, macho culture against which Junior’s identity is being formed and contested. Grandfather's interventions, though well-meaning, exert additional pressures that further complicate their bond.

Part of what makes Pelo Malo work is the script's unyielding commitment to its characters' authenticity. Rondón clearly deserves credit for drawing such poignant performances from an ensemble cast. Samuel is particularly striking as Junior, delivering an evocative performance rich with depth and authenticity. He flawlessly captures Junior's enthusiasm and innocence, as well as his muted confusion and anxiety about the world around him and his mom's responses to his desires. Samantha Castillo is equally terrific as the struggling, single mother, juggling job interviews and trying to contain her panic over perceived signs of her son's direction.

In the backdrop of the narrative is a vivid portrayal of contemporary Venezuela. The movie alternates between the cramped interiors of the apartment and the bustling streets of Caracas, the latter serving as a reminder of the external pressures that bear upon the characters. There are shots of crowded streets, long queues for jobs, random searches, rallies, and – in a particularly striking scene with Junior and his friend – ubiquitous pollution.

Rondón often contrasts intimate, claustrophobic scenes within the apartment with sweeping cityscapes. Junior's dreams and his mother's fears both play out against this backdrop of a country in flux.

Pelo Malo uses an intimate story of a mother and son to drive home the social commentary about economic pressures, prejudice, and bigotry. The film challenges us to reflect on the societal norms, prejudices, and pressures affecting personal identity and acceptance.
