Despite his initial hesitance, Sam returns to Los Angeles, where he must confront his difficult relationship with his mother, Lillian, played by the gifted Michelle Pfeiffer. Lillian, a woman who has bravely shouldered the burden of her husband's faults while left bruised by his absence and lack of commitment, is expertly portrayed by Pfeiffer. She perfectly captures the essence of her character, who is not only dealing with her husband's death but also navigating her strained relationship with her son, Sam.

While back in his hometown, going through his father's belongings, Sam stumbles upon a shaving kit, containing one hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cash and a letter from his late father. The letter directs him to deliver the money to a woman named Frankie (Elizabeth Banks) and her son. Puzzled and intrigued, Sam sets off to investigate, only revealing himself as the brother after closely studying Frankie and her son.

Elizabeth Banks portrays the character, Frankie, a recovering alcoholic and a single mother struggling to raise her rebellious pre-teen son, Josh. Banks perfectly articulates her character's depth, pulling off an impressive performance that ranges from tough and independent to vulnerable and emotional. The real-life struggles of her character resonate strongly with the audience, while her chemistry with Pine helps make their scenes believable and gripping.
