Boguslaw Linda, one of Poland's most popular actors, plays the role of Petronius, a sophisticated man who serves as the advisor to Nero. Though Petronius disapproves of Nero's barbarity, he must hide his true feelings to survive on Nero's court. His character brings subtle humor, diplomacy, and intelligence which balance out the appalling actions undertaken by Nero.

Throughout the movie, Marcus’s struggle between his love for Lygia and his loyalty to the Roman Empire set up the crux of the story. This epic historical drama impressively portrays the moral conflict of the era and the clash between the nascent Christian faith and the then-dominant pagan Roman ideologies.
