Shock-O-Rama

Shock-O-Rama from 2005 is an exploitation throwback horror anthology film that utilizes sensibilities of 70s and 80s B-movie horror to present three horrifying stories intertwined by a central plot. Directed by Brett Piper, the movie features Erin Brown, Duane Polcou, Michael R. Thomas, and David Fine in crucial roles.

The leading lady, Rebecca Raven (Erin Brown), is a star of the fictional B-movie line of Shock-O-Rama Cinema. Superbly portrayed by Brown, Rebecca's character is a woman with a beleaguered spirit, constantly underestimated and belittled by the powers-that-be in the film industry. The B-movie diva, tired of low-budget schlock axes her contract, leaving her with no income and nowhere to go. That spiteful decision sets the stage for three wild and wicked tales meant to tickle the terror bone of any horror movie fan.

As the movie unfolds, Rebecca finds herself engulfed in a trio of horrifying tales. The stories commence while she's taking refuge in an old decrepit building. The first tale, entitled "Meat Man," revolves around a ghoulish butcher who, after his death, becomes a bane to those who treated him unfairly during his lifetime.

Then comes, "The Vampire of Hamburg," a sanguinary tale of a Nazi officer, victimized under the grudges of a wronged young woman. The woman’s spirit haunts the Nazi officer, taking the form of a vampire, causing him to relive his sin every night in a perpetual state of fear and regret.

The last story, "Lonely Are the Brain," tells the tale of a haunted scientist who gets entangled in his bizarre experiment that results in an alien creature birthed from his mind. These stories, replete with apparent B-level goofiness, truly encapsulate the low-budget horror film aesthetics with ingenious, practical effects, consciously cheesy dialogues, and a dark form of humor.

Back to the narrative's central arc, Rebecca's individual journey in the old, rundown, and creepy building falls prey to eerie incidents. With no one around and a thunderstorm raging outside, strange occurrences amplify her paranoia as she explores this dilapidated structure. However, as the stories unfold and Rebecca confronts her own fears, she emerges as a more confident and resilient individual.

Erin Brown's performance as Rebecca is commendable, as she moves through the array of emotions demanded by a range of narratives. She succinctly transitions between the role of a world-weary actress fed up with her career's vulgarity and a terrified woman plunged into a labyrinth of horror and struggle for survival.

The film does not skimp on the special effects department, paying homage to older traditional methods. Brett Piper and his team masterfully use practical effects and stop-motion animations to bring various ghastly creatures to life. This blend of retro and traditional creates a strikingly quirky atmosphere that sets it apart from other contemporary horror movies.

Duane Polcou as the much-hated studio head and Michael R. Thomas as the creepy caretaker of the old building, solidly render their respective roles. David Fine also gives a memorable performance as the haunted scientist in one of the sub-stories.

Shock-O-Rama delves into the realm of B-movie horror, replete with campy overtones, edgy narratives, and surprisingly touching moments of humanity.
