Slackers

Slackers is a 2002 American comedy film, directed by Dewey Nicks, and starring Devon Sawa, Robert B. Martin Jr., Jason Segel among a very talented ensemble that infuses the film with charm, wit and an impressive comedic rhythm.

The movie is centered around three best friends and college seniors - Dave (Devon Sawa), Sam (Jason Segel) and Jeff (Michael C. Maronna). Known around campus as the "slackers", not for being lazy or indolent, but because they have perfected an elaborate system of cheating that has managed to keep them at the top of their university, despite rarely attending class. They make their way through academia without so much as cracking a book, by creatively outsmarting both the system and the college administration, which provides plenty of opportunities for comedy and hijinks.

However, things take a turn when their scheme is discovered by Ethan (Jason Schwartzman), the school's geek and socially awkward overachiever. Instead of turning the 'slackers' in, Ethan, who is romantically obsessed with Angela (Jaime King), the school's most attractive and popular girl, proposes a deal. He will keep their secret if they help him win Angela's heart. Although Ethan doesn't exactly fit the description of Angela's ideal guy, the slackers have no other option but to comply to avoid expulsion.

Devon Sawa shines as the quick-thinking, charming slacker Dave who primarily shoulders the responsibility of helping Ethan in his wooing adventures, underscoring the movie’s thematic exploration of friendship, loyalty and the age-old debate of brains vs. brawn in attaining success. Jason Segel brings his unique comedic timing and charisma to the role of Sam, whose personality traits of being carefree and easygoing further add depth to the trio's dynamic.

Jason Schwartzman steals the show in many scenes as the socially inept Ethan, playing the character with an over-exaggeration that is at once amusingly disturbing, strangely endearing and comically pathetic. King's believable and invested performance make Angela a character that is far from a mere object of affection between the protagonists but a significant contributor to the humor and drama of the story.
