Solomon Kane

In an endeavor to find redemption and escape his damned fate, Kane renounces his violent past and takes an oath of pacifism. He adopts the life of a monk, completely withdrawing himself from the world he knew. But fate has a different path laid out for him, that is both more dangerous and redemptive than a life of solitude. The world around him is falling into darkness. England is being overrun by shadowy creatures, and innocent people, like the Crowthorn family, are being slaughtered. It is revealed that an evil sorcerer, Malachi, is behind these diabolical activities, intending to cast the whole of England into a state of darkness.

Resigned to his peaceful days in a remote monastery, Solomon Kane is forced out of his solitude as he finds himself on a path towards salvation and heroism. When the beautiful and innocent Meredith Crowthorn, played by Rachel Hurd-Wood, and her pacifist family are attacked by Malachi's minions, a protector awakens within Solomon Kane. He goes against his vow of peace and picks up his weapons to save them and more so, save what's left of his soul.

James Purefoy's brooding and relentless portrayal of Solomon Kane grips the viewer, making them root for his redemption. Rachel Hurd-Wood does a standout job as Meredith, the young girl whose life Kane swears to protect. Veteran actor Max von Sydow also appears in the film as an intricate part of Solomon's past, adding another layer to the complex character of Solomon Kane.

The visual storytelling in Solomon Kane is complemented tremendously by Dan Laustsen's atmospheric cinematography. The landscapes are bleak, and the castle in the climax shrouded in perpetual darkness fits in with the film's tone perfectly. The film presents an interesting mix of sword fights, gunpowder, and black magic, and delivers a plentitude of visually impressive fights and battles.

The movie does a commendable job of showcasing Solomon Kane's psychic landscape.
