Where to Watch Son of Kong

1933

Son of Kong follows Carl Denham, the film director from the original 1933 classic "King Kong", who returns to Skull Island after the chaos and destruction caused by bringing King Kong back to New York. After the ordeal and the lawsuits that followed, Carl Denham has become a wanted man in the US, prompting him to return to Skull Island.

Most of the original cast returns in the sequel, with Robert Armstrong reprising his role as Carl Denham. Denham is shown to be suffering from the aftermath of the adventurous debacle of the first movie. He was not only financially ruined but is also drowning in legal troubles for the destruction caused by Kong.

This leads him to a last-ditch attempt to salvage his reputation and fortune. Acting on a hint from ship's captain, Englehorn (Frank Reicher), that there might be a hidden treasure on Skull Island, Denham decides to head back and they sets sail to the dangerous territory once again. This time around, the journey involves an unexpected new member of the ship, a stowaway named Hilda, played by Helen Mack.

Hilda is a fugitive who's running away after the accidental death of her father caused by her vile suitor who happens to be Denham's old enemy from the first movie. Her character introduces a subtle romantic angle to the otherwise action-packed plot. As the trio makes its way to Skull Island, a storm hits the ship leading to a shipwreck that separates the crew and marks the start of an even more hair-raising journey.

The real kicker, of course, is that Kong’s offspring still inhabit this primal paradise. The son of Kong, named "Little Kong," takes center stage from here on making the title relevant. The creature is smaller and more endearing than its predecessor. However, it doesn't make him any less dangerous.

One of the most interesting aspects of this film is that it largely doubles down on the elements that made the original Kong so appealing. There’s more adventure, more danger, and more Kong. However, Son of Kong adds an extra emotional depth to the narrative by focusing on the bond between Man and Kong. Little Kong is portrayed as more of a gentle soul compared to his father, showcasing a softer side to Kong that wasn't explored in the original movie.

Son of Kong gracefully repeats the magic of its predecessor while introducing unique elements to the narrative. The sequel may not have the same grandeur as the original, and the effects are more limited (of course, for its time), but it has a charm of its own. There's a palpable sense of wit and fun to this movie that promises a significant tonal shift from the darker, original film.

The overall structure of the story is not a mere repetition of the first film but a fresh narrative with a new twist focusing more on the comic and less terrifying aspects. Denham’s character arc from an obsessed adventurer to a man repenting upon his mistakes is brought about tactfully. The romantic angle of Hilda and Denham is also a departure from the original's strong emphasis on only display of colonialism and adventure.

Furthermore, it's important to commend the animation and visual effects of the 1930s. The special effects, especially the scale model of the "Little Kong," was uncannily realistic for the time and demonstrated the enormous technical advancement filmmakers had made in a very short time. All things considered, it's a more intimate, lighter movie that moves briskly and wraps up smartly.

Son of Kong evolves the King Kong saga and brings an adventurous sequel that deepens the narrative and character arcs introduced in the original movie. Its pacing and lighter mood allow new viewers to enjoy it while giving fans of the original plenty to enjoy.

Son of Kong is a Adventure, Horror, Action, Science Fiction movie released in 1933. It has a runtime of 69 min. Critics and viewers have rated it moderate reviews, with an IMDb score of 5.6. It also holds a MetaScore of 50.
