In his new locality, he turns his charismatic charms and set his sights on his new target, a much distressed widow Carol, played by Meg Foster. Carol is a woman struggling to come to terms with her husband's death. Having a teenage son, she presents a perfect picture of the new family for Gene.

Terry O’Quinn’s portrayal is chillingly deceptive as he manipulates his surroundings to close in on his victims. His performance perfectly balances between the eeriness of a psychopath and the common man's charm as he worms his way into the unsuspecting family's lives. Meanwhile, Meg Foster does an exceptional job as the jaded yet hopeful widow, unknowingly inviting a maniac into her life.

The film further introduces a side character, Matty, played by Caroline Williams. Seeing herself as an affable amateur sleuth, she suspects there's more to Gene than meets the eye. Her instinctual suspicion of him provides for a crucial subplot in the film, which drives the narrative forward.
