Sugar

Sugar is a co-production of the United States and the Dominican Republic, directed by two of the most talented film directors in the indie scene, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. This 2008 film centers around the story of a Dominican baseball player, Miguel 'Sugar' Santos (Algenis Perez Soto) whose journey towards realizing his dream serves as a metaphor for the immigrant experience in America, bringing with it an exploration of themes such as cultural disorientation, adaptation, identity, and the concept of 'American Dream.'

Miguel 'Sugar' Santos, a gifted pitching prospect from San Pedro De Macoris, Dominican Republic, is scouted and recruited to play Minor League Baseball in the United States. The film's nickname 'Sugar' is derived from the Dominican slang for a curveball, a term used to connote deception or something that is not what it seems—an apt reflection of the young man's dream and the reality of the baseball industry.

The young pitcher has one solitary goal: to secure his family’s financial future and escape the impoverished life he and his family live in the Dominican Republic. To achieve this, he firmly believes that he must make it to the Major Leagues in the US. Armed with his impressive curveball and an unwavering determination, he embarks on his journey.

Upon arrival on American soil, 'Sugar' is sent to Bridgetown, Iowa, a fictional town, to play baseball for a low-rung farm team of the Kansas City Knights. The movie vividly illustrates his struggle to cope with his new life. From language barriers and culture shock to homesickness and the harsh realities of sports business, 'Sugar' experiences various challenges that make his dream frequently seem insurmountable.

He finds himself lodged with a host family in Iowa, the Hogans, who take in young aspiring players as a form of hometown boosterism. Newcomer Algenis Perez Soto, who was chosen from hundreds of hopefuls in an open casting call in the Dominican Republic, delivered a strong, sympathetic performance as the film's lead character. His depiction of 'Sugar'’s internal conflict between his personal and professional life is poignant and touching. Simultaneously, the performance of Jose Rijo, a former Major League Baseball (MLB) player and a real-life testament to the narrative, adds veridicality to the depiction of the baseball world. Walki Cuevas also appeared in a supporting role.

Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have attempted to show the other side of the American Dream, presenting an uncensored look at the unnoticed life of these foreign minor league baseball players and the socio-economic benefits and drawbacks they bring along with them.
