Their primary purpose in this strange dimension, yet reminding of their own, is to save Princess Daisy. Samantha Mathis breathes life into the character of Princess Daisy, which fans will recognize from the video game series.

This alternate realm, the outcome of a meteorite strike millions of years ago, is ruled by the tyrannical King Koopa, brought menacingly to life by Dennis Hopper. It's a dystopian world where King Koopa rules in oppressive dictatorial fashion, justifying the dire need for the heroes. As evident from the games, our protagonists find themselves thrown into an exhilarating adventure characterized by danger at every turn, with their plumbing skills proving unexpectedly useful in a world hovering at the brink of doom.

Things get even more intriguing when we learn that Daisy is in possession of a fragment of the meteorite that created this parallel universe. One look at it affirms its importance as an artifact of energy and power that can merge the two dimensions. Naturally, King Koopa desperately wants to acquire it to merge the two worlds and take over Earth. This sets up the overarching conflict in the film.

Once transported into the dinosaur world, the Mario brothers undergo a vivid series of adventures, coming across all manner of eccentric characters, ominous landscapes and mind-bending scenarios. The movie is particularly known for its artistic representation, which is a synthesis of the fantastical and the grim. Expect to see dramatic size-enhancing mushroom power-ups, uncanny enemies, and thrilling chases, with fan-favorite characters making an appearance, keeping fan excitement buzzing throughout.

The film, despite reimagining the tone, key elements, and visuals of the original series, ensures that it remains unmistakably 'Mario' - from the unforgettable "power-up" sound effects to the grandeur of a towering castle. Coupled with special effects that were cutting-edge at the time, the film presents an interpretation of the Mario Universe that is whimsical, outrageous, and at times grim - much like a videogame made flesh and blood.

The performances are a treat too. As Mario, Hoskins brings a blend of strong resolve and endearing charm to the character. Leguizamo, as Luigi, is lovable in his innocence and hero-worship of Mario, while his romantic subplot with Princess Daisy adds another layer to the film. Samantha Mathis plays a convincingly robust and sensitive Princess Daisy, offering a modern-day damsel who is as resourceful as she is in distress. However, it’s Dennis Hopper who steals the show with his deliciously wicked portrayal of King Koopa.

Super Mario Bros., draped in elements of sci-fi, fantasy, and action, bears little resemblance to the candy-colored world of the video games. However, it builds its own identity as a cinematic adaptation, infusing familiar characters with unique characteristics, and presenting existing narratives in a fresh and distinctly dystopian lens. It might split opinions, but it is nonetheless an audacious, lively, special-effects-laden adventure that paints a fascinatingly different picture of the Super Mario universe.
