Superstar is a quirky American comedy film released in 1999 that stars Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell, with a supporting cast that includes Elaine Hendrix. It is directed by Bruce McCulloch and written by Steven Wayne Koren. The film brings to life one of Saturday Night Live's most enduring characters, Mary Katherine Gallagher, brilliantly portrayed by Molly Shannon.

Superstar unfolds around the unique character of Mary Katherine Gallagher, an unpopular, socially awkward Catholic high school student living in a small-town suburb. Mary is an imaginative, whimsical girl with a wild dream - to passionately kiss someone. Influenced by her overt fascination with the world of pop culture, movies and television, she firmly believes that the way to achieve this dream is by becoming a superstar. She often finds solace in her fantasies, where she is always the center of attention and, consequently, the superstar she aspires to be.

Mary is portrayed as a socially calamitous character who is relegated to the outskirts of her high school's social circuits. She often stumbles into awkward situations, many of which result in slapstick and physical comedy befitting Molly Shannon's Saturday Night Live comedy pedigree. Mary's only friends are her pious best friend and fellow outsider Helen, skillfully performed by Emmy Laybourne, and her caring but overprotective grandmother (Glynis Johns), who raised Mary after her parents tragically died in a wild story involving Irish step dancing—an incident that Mary refers to as "the accident."

Mary's sights are set on the school hunk and football star, Sky Corrigan, played by Will Ferrell of SNL fame, whose natural comedic timing and charisma serve as an excellent foil to Mary's eager, endearing character. Sky is utterly oblivious to Mary’s interest in him, mainly because he’s dating the prettiest and most popular girl in school, Evian, ingeniously portrayed by Elaine Hendrix. Her character gives a clear nod to the classic mean-girl stereotype, often making Mary the butt of her jokes.

In a bid to grab Sky’s attention and fulfill her dream, Mary decides she has to star in the school’s talent show, an event that she believes will propel her to ever-desired stardom. The plot amplifies when a big-city "movie producer" promises a bit part in a movie to the talent show's winner, raising the stakes for Mary. Her journey though is not smooth, fraught with hilarious obstacles, such as, when her audacious antics cause the school's sanctimonious principal (Mark McKinney) to watch her with a disapproving eye.

Superstar uses a surrealistic approach to its humour, frequently escalating mundane events in ways that stretch the barriers of credibility for comedic effect, playing up the quirkiness and turning hilarious situations downright absurd. Large parts of the film address the dramatic difference between Mary’s spectacular fantasies and her less than stellar reality. It also harnesses the classic motif of an underdog story, following Mary as she fights to overcome her personal struggles and social barriers.

Moreover, the movie is rife with 90s pop culture references, inviting the audience to navigate the all too relatable, often ridiculous landscape of high school drama that is filled with unrequited crushes, popularity contests, bullies, and vehemently pursued dreams.
