The Alpha Incident

The Alpha Incident is a classic low-budget science fiction thriller released in the year 1978. However, in a fateful turn of events, a small quantity of the microorganism lands unwittingly in the hands of an unsuspecting railway worker named Hank (played by George 'Buck' Flower), setting in motion a chain of suspenseful occurrences.

Meanwhile, the prototypical hard-boiled character of Charlie, played by Ralph Meeker, is introduced. Charlie is a freight company investigator who sees through the tall tales of the unassuming worker, thus intertwining his fate with the ominous narrative running in the background.

In an unusual twist, the wrath of the microorganism is not felt through its immediate lethality. Instead, it inflicts its havoc in a much more psychologically terrifying manner. As sleep deprivation starts to have its impact, leading each character on a downward spiral of paranoia, viewers are treated to heavy doses of edge-of-your-seat suspense.

As the suspense mounts, the viewers are treated to galvanizing and, even at times, claustrophobic suspense, with the true horror emanating more from the human condition and the psychological torment of the characters, rather than the gruesome effects of the microorganism per se.

Interspersed within this suspenseful narrative, we see flashes of a governmental cover-up, as well as the fervent race against time by the scientific community for developing an antidote to prevent absolute catastrophe in this nerve-racking setup.

The Alpha Incident is a masterful blend of the ticking-clock tension of thrillers and the conceptual depth of science fiction. It taps into primal human fears and anxieties and looms large with the horrifying consequence of the microorganism, thus presenting a suspenseful roller-coaster ride that effectively dabbles in psychological, consequential, and bio-hazard horror.
