The twist is that now they are actually dealing with real enchantments far beyond their control or understanding. Unwittingly thrown into this ordeal, the brothers must employ their knowledge of folklore to break the ancient curse if they are to save the village and themselves.

Accompanying them is the intrepid hunter Angelika, refreshingly portrayed by Lena Headey. She acts as a compelling foil to the two charlatan brothers and a bridge to the ordinary villagers suffering from the supernatural affliction. Real emotion and stakes are injected into the plot as the brothers' initial skepticism and self-interest evolve into a genuine mission to rid Marbaden of its curse, fuelled by their growing bond with Angelika.

Set against a backdrop of the dense woods and countless superstitions of rural Germany, the film's art direction perfectly captures the blend of grim reality and fairytale wonder inherent in the traditional Grimm stories. The film’s visuals are aptly atmospheric - earthy yet magical, achieving a peculiarly dark charm in parallel with the narrative. For instance, the forest surrounding Marbaden seems alive, promoting a sense of gloom and danger, bestowing the film with a look and feel that mixes historical realism with fantasy.

Damon and Ledger, as the titular Brothers Grimm, deliver dynamic performances that bring the characters to life. Damon's Wilhelm is the charismatic trickster, confident and calculative, while Ledger's Jacob is the genuine believer, the dreamer who provides a sensitive counterpoint to his older brother's cynical pragmatism. Both characters own distinct layers and subtle nuances, making them human and relatable to the audience. Ledger’s performance, in particular, takes a decidedly different and more sophisticated tone from his characters in other contemporary films, showcasing the late actor's versatility and allure.

Monica Bellucci's Mirror Queen is a highlight, serving as a formidable antagonist. Her regal looks combined with her stirring performance add a layer of mystic allure and terror to the story. All in all, The Brothers Grimm is a whimsically dark cinematic experience, steeped in legend and storytelling, which captures the spirit of the classic Grimm tales in a way few films have managed to achieve.
