Once Melanie and the other deportees reach Siberia, their hardship continues. Mekss's portrayal of Augusts creates a haunting presence throughout Melanie's Siberian exile even though they're separated. Alongside them, the talented Ivars Krasts plays another crucial character, wrapping up a terrific primary cast that delivers power-packed performances.

The Siberian gulag where the Latvians are forced to settle is unwelcoming and treacherous. The harsh landscape is a major antagonist in the film, reducing life to a desperate struggle for survival. Here, the story focuses on Melanie's persistent fight as the heads of her family, her difficulties, and how she manages to take care of her son and survive the odds.

The film does an outstanding job in terms of cinematography with Gints Bērziņš behind the camera. The use of natural light to spotlight the dramatic, endless landscapes of Siberia and contrast that with the claustrophobic, dark interiors of the train work to great effect. This visual playing along with Eriks Esenvalds' stirring musical score amplifies the emotional weightiness of scenes, making them infinitely more impactful.

The director's historical accuracy in crafting the movie is commendable. The movie is, indeed, based on a true ethnic purge, a forgotten chapter of history which was drawn from the memoirs of a real Latvian woman named Melānija Vanaga.
