The Maid

The Maid is a 2005 Singaporean horror film directed by Kelvin Tong and starring Alessandra de Rossi, Huifang Hong, and Benny Soh. It marks the return of Singapore to the international horror scene, which was dormant since the late '90s. The importance of this belief is highlighted in the film as both a cultural representation and as a haunting premise. The family for whom Rosa is working is steadfast in upholding these traditions. They burn paper money for the spirits, leave food out for their ethereal visitors, and even advise Rosa not to go out after dark.

As Rosa familiarizes herself with the large, old house and the traditional Chinese family's customs, she experiences a series of mysterious events that are hard to decipher. Alessandra De Rossi gives a convincing portrayal of a maiden going through cultural shock, fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Her eyes express her terror and helplessness in the face of situations she cannot understand nor control.

Benny Soh plays the strict, stern father who is devoted to his family and to upholding traditional practices. His performance brings a certain tension and suspense to the movie. Huifang Hong as Ah Ma is a passive presence whose non-verbal character adds another layer of mystery to the unfolding plot.
