Where to Watch The Tripper

2006

Directed by David Arquette, The Tripper is a tenacious and quirky blend of political satire and horror that premiered in 2006, commissioning an ensemble cast that includes Jaime King, Thomas Jane, and Lukas Haas. The film cleverly interweaves comedy with dread to form an unconventional narrative.

The Tripper has a rather unique premise. The storyline is nested in the Redwood forests of Northern California, the range for a haplessly-contemplated outdoor music festival labelled “Free Love.” However, the anticipated peace, love, and harmony is disjointed when the presence of a deranged psychopath lurking in the shadows comes to light. We are introduced to a group of friends initially hoping to enjoy a weekend of fun, extravaganza, good music, and possibly psychedelic substances. What they didn't anticipate, was the creepy stalker's presence, adding a tension-filled, horror-infused twist to their journey.

Jaime King, portraying the role of Samantha, is a recovering drug addict who finds friendship, support, and a different perspective with a group of carefree hippies. Meanwhile, Thomas Jane plays the character of Buzz Hall, a hard-boiled, local lawman tasked with overseeing security at the festival. Buzz Hall struggles to control the chaos caused by ecstatic festival-goers while also trying to balance the revelations of the horror that is about to unfold. Lukas Haas plays Ivan, Samantha’s possessive boyfriend whose jealousy, paranoia, and possessiveness adds tension to an already distressing situation.

The film taps into the horror genera while infusing elements of political satire, possibly an allusion to the 1960s era of countercultural movement, free love, and peace demonstrations juxtaposed against the idea of conservative paranoia and politico-driven vendetta. Yet, these elements are coated in a layer of humor that instigates a mixture of dread and laughter, bridging the hazy line between irony and horror.

Interestingly, the menacing killer in The Tripper has a bizarre obsession with former President Ronald Regan — so much so that he mimics Regan and quotes him while committing dreadful acts. This peculiar twist gives the story an extra edge compared to typical slasher films, as it blends political satire and psychedelia to the intensely building horror.

Rather than relying on gore or shock value, The Tripper navigates its way through suspense and anticipation. It emphasizes more on escalating fear, using the dense, natural setting of the forest and the masquerade of a music festival to its advantage. The horror is mingled with discord and nervous laughter that comes from the absurdity of circumstances.

The movie also benefits from the cinematography by Bobby Bukowski, who captures the essence of the free-spirit festival and the eerie, vast wilderness of the forest, amplifying the unsettlement and apprehension in the narrative. The visuals depict an uncomfortable dichotomy between what is seen —a seemingly peaceful music gathering— and what’s coming —the creeping fear of the unknown killer.

The ensemble cast gives commendable performances, each bringing their distinctive quirks and dimension to their characters. Most notable are Jaime King's emotionally damaged but resilient Samantha and Thomas Jane's nonchalant but committed Buzz Hall. Their characters provide stability to the film's narrative which continuously oscillates between horror, comedy, tension, and absurdity.

Despite revolving around an outdoor music fest, the film doesn't focus much on the actual music; rather, it uses the festival and its atmosphere as a backdrop to the unfolding drama.

In the end, The Tripper cleverly undermines the cliches of the horror genre with a nonchalant, dark humor and a bizarre storyline. It takes us on a roller-coaster ride of fear, dread, and amusement. If you enjoy your horror films with a stroke of satire and a touch of the odd, then The Tripper is definitely worth watching.
