Thor: The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World, released in 2013 and directed by Alan Taylor is the second movie in the Thor franchise, and the eighth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The movie stars Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the God of Thunder, Thor. Other returning cast members include Natalie Portman as Dr. Jane Foster, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Anthony Hopkins as Odin.

The movie abandons the earthly setting of the first film and introduces us to the expanding cosmos of the Marvel world. It embarks with a historic narration concerning an ancient, evil race known as the Dark Elves. Deemed a horrendous threat, Odin’s father, Bor, engaged with the Dark Elves in a gruesome battle to secure the universe, succeeding in vanquishing them and their weapon, or so he thought.

The narrative then catapults us forward to present time, post the spectacular 'Battle of New York' featured in ‘Marvel's The Avengers’, and finds the imposing Thor restoring peace in the Nine Realms through his unrivalled strength and heroism. Simultaneously, on Earth, we see the delightful Dr. Jane Foster, Thor’s love interest, pursuing her career as an astrophysicist in London and still reeling from Thor’s abrupt departure. Through a course of inevitable events, she crosses paths with the lost Aether and becomes its unwitting host. This event does not only catch the attention of our mighty Asgardian hero but also awakens the presumed defeated Dark Elves, setting down a thrilling cascade of events.

Thor: The Dark World is visually absorbing, a feature that fans have come to expect from Marvel productions. The panorama of Asgard has been portrayed with a charming blend of regal majesty and advanced technology that reflects an otherworldly feel. The Dark World, however, does not shy away from intensifying the stakes.
