Charm School is a reality television series that aired from 2007 to 2009. The show is an exciting extension of the Flavor of Love and Rock of Love franchises by VH1. Notably produced by renowned producers Cris Abrego and Mark Cronin, the show aimed at reforming the behaviors and attitudes of some of the infamous reality TV contestants viewers had come to love or hate.
The basis of Charm School is quite interesting and thoroughly entertaining. It gave past contestants from the Flavor of Love and Rock of Love series a second chance at reality TV fame but with a twist; they had to improve their conduct and manners. Contestants who had been previously characterized by their outrageous, eccentric, or sometimes downright vulgar behavior were hence given a golden opportunity to turn over a new leaf, with some achieving notable progress.
Charm School featured three seasons, each differently themed and hosted. The first season was hosted by comedian Mo'Nique and featured contestants from the first two seasons of Flavor of Love. Season two or Rock of Love: Charm School was hosted by Sharon Osbourne and welcomed participants from both seasons of Rock of Love with Bret Michaels. Lastly, season three named Charm School with Ricki Lake incorporated contestants from Rock of Love Bus, Real Chance of Love, and For the Love of Ray J, providing a mixture of personalities from different backgrounds.
The setup was something similar to a boarding school, where the contestants lived together under one roof and underwent various lessons and challenges designed to instruct them in etiquette, civility, and overall 'lady-like' behavior. Charm School provided humorous, and at times enlightening, insight into the efforts of these contestants to develop their table manners, improve their language, sort out their personal lives, and transform their general attitudes.
Each episode usually included a challenge that tested the contestants' character and new-found skills, with their performance influencing their standing in the competition. After each challenge, the host held a ‘report-card ceremony,’ where they evaluated the progress or regress of the contestants. This was followed by elimination, where one or more of the ‘students’ were expelled from Charm School for failing to exhibit the desired turnaround in their behavior and attitude.
Essentially, Charm School was a rehabilitation program for notorious reality stars aiming to make them better people. By using a variety of tests and challenges, utilizing the help of special guest stars, and leaning on the vulnerability and earnestness of the contestants, the show endeavored to create a platform for personal growth and development.
Although Charm School was a competition with a cash prize for the winner, the show gave a unique opportunity to its contestants to reshape their public perception. Contestants had a real shot at redemption, an opportunity to break away from the negative persona they had once gloried in, and to prove that they could rise above the gimmicky and often cutting caricatures they had previously portrayed.
In conclusion, Charm School was VH1's entertaining endeavour to re-educate former reality TV contestants on proper decorum, etiquette, and overall refined behavior. Even with its humorous and outlandish moments, the show provided a platform for the participants to self-reflect and grow. Despite its seemingly frivolous or gimmicky approach, the series had the underlying message that it is never too late to change oneself and improve their behavior – a true reality check within a reality show.
Charm School is a series categorized as a canceled. Spanning 3 seasons with a total of 34 episodes, the show debuted on 2007. The series has earned a moderate reviews from both critics and viewers. The IMDb score stands at 5.5.
