Class of the Titans is a thrilling and engaging Canadian animated television series, produced by Nelvana, a renowned animation studio based in Toronto. Its creation was influenced by Greek mythology, intertwining age-old tales with a modern setting to give them a fresh, contemporary approach. The series aired from December 2005 to February 2008, spanning a total of 52 episodes over two seasons.
Set in the 21st century, the primary focus of Class of the Titans is on seven teenagers who discover that they are the descendants of ancient Greek heroes and endowed with their ancestors' exceptional abilities and strengths. These unsuspecting heroes include Jay, Atlanta, Herry, Odie, Archie, Theresa, and Neil. Each of them is related to a famed Greek figure such as Hercules, Odysseus, Achilles, Narcissus, Jason, Theseus, and Atalanta, respectfully and possess abilities that echo their ancestor's tales.
The adventure begins when the imprisoned titan Cronus escapes from his millennial captivity in Tartarus and ignites his vengeful fury on Zeus and the other Olympian gods. Hindered by a prophecy that foretells his doom at the hands of the reincarnated heroes, Cronus decides to squash this predicament at its root by ridding the world of the teenage descendants. Realizing the impending doom, Zeus does everything in his power to protect these teenagers.
Summoned to the Olympia High school under false pretenses, the seven teens then meet Hermes who discloses their lofty lineage and the huge task of saving the world lying on their nascent shoulders. Aware of their unique abilities but untrained, Zeus assigns them mentorship under the aged but cunning hero trainer, Chiron, who is the centaur trainer of Heracles. Zeus also gifts each a weapon to aid in their battles against Cronus and his minions.
Throughout the series, they confront an endless slew of threats, all while maintaining their regular teenage lives. The show involves the periodic intervention of ancient Greek deities who aid or obstruct the teens in their growth and missions, this translated ancient mythology into an urban, contemporary context filled with action-packed episodes and layered character developments. The fight scenes portray the teens' struggles against Cronus and his mythical beasts, carefully combining elements of action, comedy, and drama.
Beyond the battles and hero training, there is also a layer of interpersonal relationships, personal growth, and friendship dynamics among the main characters. Despite their hereditary links to ancient heroes, these teenagers remain relatable figures, often juggling missions with school, family, friendships, and their blossoming relationships. Each character's distinct personalities and interactions add depth and more dimensions to the narrative.
Class of the Titans cleverly adopts Greek mythology, but it also combines modern elements such as high school life, technology, and romance. This series is a clever mishmash of enduring Greek legends with a youthful, modern perspective.
Visually, the show manages to balance Greek-style aesthetics with modern styling, creating a unique and engaging environment. The art is tastefully infused with an amalgamation of sharp contrasts of Greek ancient world artifacts within the modern sprawling cityscape. This successful fusion earned the show a Best Animation nomination at the 2007 Gemini Awards.
