Set during the Chosun Dynasty of Korea, Damo is an epic historical drama series broadcast by MBC in 2003. It is a groundbreaking Korean television show which features an iconic female lead and effortlessly blends action, romance, and historical drama. The three main characters are Detective Commander Hwangbo Yoon, played by Lee Seo-jin, his undercover agent Chae-Ok, played by Ha Ji-won, and the revolutionary leader Jang Sung-Baek, played by Kim Min-jun.

The series revolves around Chae-Ok, a low-ranking female police detective, known as a 'damo' (tea lady), who is working in a world that's dominated by men. The name Damo refers to the tea lady's position in society. Damo were lowest-level female servants, whose duties included serving tea to the officers and working as undercover detectives during the Chosun Dynasty. Chae-Ok is different than other women of her era; she is very skilled in swordsmanship, literate, and can deal with any situation tactfully.

Hwangbo Yoon, the police bureau’s Chief, who comes from a noble background, displays stern, strict, and often times unemotional demeanor. He is solely focused on his duty to maintain order and justice in the land. However, beneath this exterior, he grapples with his unexpressed feelings for Chae-Ok. He acknowledges and respects her exceptional skills and even though it is against the norm of the times, he appointed her as his undercover detective to solve the cases.

On the other hand, the third main character, Jang Sung-Baek, fought against the government to bring about justice for the common people. He has an unresolved past with Chae-Ok, adding to the flavour of suspense in the show’s storyline.

"Borrowing elements from Hong Kong martial arts films, Damo was the first Korean drama to bring in wire action techniques and extensive CGI, setting a new standard of quality for Korean historical dramas." A lot of the drama centres around sword fights which brings action as an essential element into the drama.

One of the beauties of this show is its illustration of the complicated dynamics of social class hierarchy during the era of the Chosun Dynasty. The people are deeply divided based on their social status, even when it comes to love. Despite Chae-Ok's bravery, strength and intelligence, her low social status makes her less than favourable for marriage by society's standards.

The historical setting of the series brings an element of realism and implies a degree of seriousness, giving the audience an insight into the cultural and historical aspects of the time. This show also incorporates flashes of humour, which is sprinkled throughout the series, offering viewers a break from the heavy themes which dominate most of the episodes.

Ha Ji-won's portrayal of Chae-Ok has been widely lauded. Through Chae-Ok's character, Ha Ji-won brings to life the strength and resilience of women even in historical context where they were not given much importance. Lee Seo-jin and Kim Min-jun’s performances also garnered much praise, bringing real depth and growth to their characters over the 14 episodes of the series.

The cinematography and visual effects also serve to further enhance each episode, with beautifully composed shots offering wonderful views of ancient Korea. Combined with its wonderful soundtrack, these elements serve to create an excellent dramatic atmosphere and intense emotional scenes that resonate with viewers.

In conclusion, Damo is a series that illuminated both Korean history and culture, presented an unconventional heroine and explored the themes of duty, justice and love. This MBC drama remains one of the most celebrated entries in the Korean historical dramas, making it a must watch for those seeking action, drama and a deep storyline set in a rich historical context.

Damo is a series categorized as a canceled. Spanning 1 seasons with a total of 14 episodes, the show debuted on 2009. The series has earned a moderate reviews from both critics and viewers. The IMDb score stands at 7.4.
