Based on the 2002 movie of the same name directed by Steven Spielberg, Minority Report is an engaging science fiction crime drama television series that aired on Fox in 2015.
The show takes place in the year 2065 in Washington D.C., a time and place far more technologically advanced and sophisticated than what we know today. The world of Minority Report is a future where crime prevention has flourished due to the existence of Precrime, a now defunct department of the government that had the ability to stop crimes before they occurred.
The premise of the series continuation revolves around one of the Precogs, Dash, played by Stark Sands. In the original film, the Precogs were three children who were gifted with the psychic ability to foresee future crimes, and were exploited by the Precrime unit to predict violent crimes before they happened. Fast-forward to the 2015 series, the government's Precrime program has been disbanded and the Precogs are struggling to live a normal life outside of the confines of the defunct unit.
The series picks up with Dash, the youngest of the three Precogs, tormented by the inability to control his vivid and often traumatising visions of future crimes. Unable to turn a blind eye to these imminent crimes, Dash sets out on a mission to prevent these acts from happening. With the assistance of a resourceful detective, Lara Vega, played by Meagan Good, they team up to put Dash's unique ability to good use in an effort to change the future and save lives.
Minority Report uniquely combines science fiction with crime solving, using Dash's predictions as the primary lead in each episode's crime. These predictions, however, are not completely clear and only provide fragments of what may happen, with much of the narrative revolving around Dash and Vega piecing together these puzzles to prevent the crime from happening.
Despite the sci-fi elements, Minority Report also delves into the daily life of the not-so-distant future, portraying how technology has transformed society. The futuristic technology that plays a key role throughout the series isn't just limited to crime prevention. Citizens in this version of 2065 interact with sophisticated holographic interfaces, use gesture-controlled computers, and rely on autonomous vehicles, making it a captivating watch for tech enthusiasts as well.
Furthermore, while principally event-based, Minority Report also cultivates its characters and their relationship dynamics, adding a personal element to the show. Dash's struggle to live a normal life and his complex relationship with his twin brother Arthur, who also shares the precognitive ability, add layers to the narrative.
Moving away from Dash and Vega, the show also brings into focus the larger societal implications of the Precrime program. It's clear that despite the program's shutdown, the debate around the ethics and morality of stopping crimes before they occur is still very much palpable in this futuristic world. This serves as a continuous theme in the series, intriguing audiences with its thought-provoking premise.
Fox's Minority Report is very much a blend of the familiar and the fantastic. At its heart, it's a procedural crime drama, where each episode sees a new crime to be solved. However, the added elements of precognition, futuristic technology, and ethical dilemmas make it stand out. This clever blend of genres can attract a diverse audience, from hardcore sci-fi fans to casual viewers who just want to see a crime solved each week.
Minority Report benefits significantly from Steven Spielberg's original concept while also creating its own identity. The series expands upon the original film's themes and characters, building a larger world around them, and filling it with engaging new stories and characters. If you're a fan of the original movie, or a sci-fi enthusiast in general, Minority Report is a series that warrants your attention.
Minority Report is a series categorized as a currently airing. Spanning 1 seasons with a total of 11 episodes, the show debuted on 2015. The series has earned a moderate reviews from both critics and viewers. The IMDb score stands at 5.9.
