Motorcity is an American animated television series that aired on the Disney XD channel from 2012 to 2013. The show spans a total of 20 episodes, each one meticulously crafted to transport viewers into a fascinating dystopian future. It is a unique take on animation, integrating elements of action, adventure, science fiction and comedy. The series was created by Chris Prynoski and produced by Titmouse, Inc., both known for their innovative and appealing animation work.
Set in the future where technology has drastically evolved and ever so intertwined with every aspect of our lives, Motorcity explores the city of Detroit. But this is not the Detroit we know today - this metropolis has transformed into a futuristic utopia known as Detroit Deluxe, which is above ground, sparkling clean, luxurious, and controlled by an eccentric billionaire, Abraham Kane. However, Kane is not the benevolent ruler he projects himself as; he has oppressive control over Detroit Deluxe, has banned personal motor vehicles, and continually keeps its citizens under surveillance.
Beneath this advanced city lies the old Detroit, now known as Motorcity. As the name implies, Motorcity is all about cars - a haven for hot-rod loving youths and motorists. It’s the complete opposite of the controlled, orderly world above, as it is filled with grunge, grit, and freedom. This underground society is where individuals live without the restrictions imposed by Kane in the world above.
The core of the series revolves around Mike Chilton, the fearless and youthful leader of a band of rebels, known as 'The Burners.' The Burners are a group of car enthusiasts who customize their vehicles into machines of war to withstand the numerous challenges the group faces. Mike and his Burners - including tech genius Chuck, skilled artist and mechanic Julie, the brute but lovable Texas, and the laid-back Dutch - fight back against Kane’s dictatorial rule, intending to protect the freedom of their underground city.
Throughout the series, Motorcity presents us thrilling, car-fueled adventures juxtaposed with the ongoing battle for freedom and control, unconventionally pairing the aura of dystopian narratives with an upbeat, youthful energy. The series is embossed with adrenaline-pumping chases, captivatingly choreographed fight scenes, and a sense of humor to balance the defiant energy. The visuals are a distinctive combination of hand-drawn animation and CGI, creating a dynamic and atmospheric aesthetic to match its fast-paced nature.
Motorcity goes beyond being simply a show about motorheads and their souped-up cars. At its heart, it's a testimony to teamwork, rebellion against totalitarianism, and the spirit of freedom. Mike and the Burners are not just rebels but symbols of resistance, fighting for what they believe despite the odds stacked against them.
Furthermore, even with its futuristic setting, the series attaches itself to relatable themes such as friendship, bravery, and resilience against adversities. It shows how the characters, with their teamwork and indomitable spirit, try to outwit and outmaneuver Kane's minions and protect their home. The characters are not just flat representations of rebels but have depth, personal story arcs, and development, making them relatable and believable.
Motorcity makes good use of its soundtrack, with its pumping music underscoring the high-tempo car chases and battles. Composed by Brian Woodbury, the music becomes a pulse-pounding undercurrent that complements the series' relentless pace.
From its unconventional metaphoric storyline to its unique artistic approach, Motorcity gives viewers an unusual experience - a dystopian setting filled with grit and grunge, complimented by high-octane animated action sequences and a humorous, youthful vibe. While the show caters to a younger demographic, it also provides mature themes that cater to older viewers, making it an enjoyable viewing for all ages.
Despite a relatively short run, Motorcity has managed to carve a spot for itself owing to its unique approach, unforgettable characters, stylistic animation, and engaging plotline. It stands as an under-appreciated gem, packed with action and adventure, and a celebration of freedom and friendship.
Motorcity is a series categorized as a canceled. Spanning 1 seasons with a total of 20 episodes, the show debuted on 2012. The series has earned a moderate reviews from both critics and viewers. The IMDb score stands at 7.2.
