Naked and Afraid is a one-of-a-kind reality series that debuted on the Discovery Channel in 2013. The show introduces an audacious and challenging approach to exploring human survival instincts. Produced with the primary objective of educating viewers about different survival techniques in the harshest of environments, Naked and Afraid pushes the bounds of reality television by spotlighting humanity's natural instinct to survive.

The concept of Naked and Afraid is based on a unique yet controversial format: Two strangers, typically a man and a woman, find themselves stranded in some of the world's most dangerous and isolated locations, ranging from arid deserts to marshy swamps, chilly mountains, or thick jungles. These participants, referred to as "survivalists," are allowed to bring only one survival item each, such as a knife or firestarter, and are stripped of clothing, safety, and comfort, left to battle the elements and must fend off attackers from the wild.

For 21 days, these survivalists, who are competent outdoorsmen and women with a wide spectrum of backgrounds, must employ their skill and wit to navigate their surroundings and find water, food, and shelter. Naked and Afraid is a true test of survival skills and mental resilience, forcing participants to endure physically exhausting and psychologically distressing conditions. The show keenly observes the personal journey of each survivalist as they face the harsh realities of survival, touching upon the fundamental human instincts and the drive to live.

Each episode is centered on a new pair of participants in a different location, creating a unique set of challenges and relative risks in each episode. The survivalists are followed by a small production crew that intervenes only during medical emergencies. The production design is intended to facilitate the most raw and real survival experience. Participants are responsible for filming their late-night and personal activities using handheld cameras.

The only thing they stand to gain, apart from an unforgettable life experience, is the 'Primitive Survival Rating' (PSR). Evaluated by experts and based on factors such as mental toughness, survival skills, and experience, the PSR is recalculated at the end of the 21 days to indicate the survivalist's overall performance and progress throughout their journey.
