Oh! Edo Rocket is an eclectic and offbeat historical comedy anime series that aired in 2007 from Chiba TV. The anime originally started as a stage play before being adapted into an animation series. The story is set in the backdrop of the Edo period of Japan, a time when the country was governed by stringent rules around how ordinary people could enjoy themselves. It begins in the summer of 1842, in the midst of the Tenpō era, a period when practically anything fun was banned.
The series primarily unfolds in Toranomon, a fictional district in Edo, inhabited by artisans and commoners, who, despite the stringent laws and regulations, managed to find various ways to entertain themselves, living their lives with utmost enthusiasm and zest. Toranomon’s fireworks craftsmen, among all occupations, are particularly known for their skills and creativity, as they once again seek to bring a splash of color and entertainment into people's lives during this dull time.
In the middle of this setting, our story revolves around a good-natured and eccentric young firework maker named Seikichi Tamaya. Despite his unconventional methods and ideas, Seikichi is renowned for his creative fireworks displays, which oftentimes provide the people of the district with their only splashes of color and joy.
One mysterious night, a strange and beautiful woman named Sora, who hails from the skies, makes a peculiar request to Seikichi. She expresses the desire to return to her home in the sky and asks Seikichi to build a firework capable of taking her there. Torn between his duty towards the town's people and his growing affection for Sora, Seikichi decides to accept the challenge and push the boundaries of his work.
Oh! Edo Rocket breaks away from the more traditional approaches to anime by combining the seriousness of historical Edo and its social issues with a crazy blend of science fiction, slapstick humor, loftily exaggerated characters, and pure insanity. It provides an enticing blend of historical and science fiction elements along with comedy, romance, and a bit of conspiracy.
The series goes out of the way to make almost every character flamboyant and memorable. It flavors up its historical setting with an impressive array of diverse characters including samurais, wealthy merchants, astronomers, and a myriad of quirky inhabitants of Edo. As the show progresses, each resident of Edo lends their idiosyncratic persona to the story making it more enjoyable.
The art and animation of Oh! Edo Rocket are quite distinct, giving the series a very lively and somewhat modern feel, despite its setting in an older time period. The color palette is refreshingly bright and upbeat, contributing to the overall animation that ranges from over-the-top slapstick action to the immensely beautiful firework displays.
The music too plays a significant role in the series, with peppy opening and closing themes that mirror the energy and spirit of the show. The background score is fittingly dynamic and engaging, encompassing a wide variety of genres that complement the lively visual spectacle on offer.
But beyond its colorful exterior, the show delves into some thoughtful and emotional moments too. It explores themes such as freedom, identity, creativity, and societal pressures in a subtly profound way.
The delightful blend of comedy, genuine human stories, and eccentric sci-fi is what sets Oh! Edo Rocket apart from typical anime series. It knows when to be serious and when to utterly abandon all preconceptions of reality in favor of ridiculous humor and lunacy. This ability of the show to effortlessly switch between its serious and humor aspects plays a significant role in making Oh! Edo Rocket an enjoyable and whimsical package.
With all of this combined, Oh! Edo Rocket emerged as a uniquely wacky adventure indulging its viewers in an endless carnival of fireworks, bizarre aliens, imposing villains, outrageous jokes, and above all, a touching and stirring story that has a lot to say about life, joy, and reaching towards one’s dreams. This is one firework of a show that, once lit, will definitely captivate and entertain you till the very end.
Oh! Edo Rocket is a series categorized as a new series. Spanning 1 seasons with a total of 26 episodes, the show debuted on 2007. The series has earned a moderate reviews from both critics and viewers. The IMDb score stands at 7.3.
