However, when Raikou is incapacitated by an unexpected illness, his sister Hikaru assumes his persona and takes on the heavy mantle of the quest. Hikaru, disguised as her brother, collects a group of capable companions and embarks on an adventurous and hazardous journey through Japan, full of supernatural elements and epic battles.

The first half of Otogizoushi depicts Hikaru's journey during the Heian period, immersing the viewers in rich Japanese history. As she faces various trials, Hikaru evolves from a timid, naive girl into a determined, skilled warrior, providing us with a well-rounded character development.

This already engrossing set-up takes a surprising twist in the second half of the series, which occurs in the contemporary period. Hikaru, Raikou, and others appear as high-school students in 21st-century Tokyo, where they are faced with a set of challenges completely different from the Heian era. Akin to its precursor, the modern part of the series deals with societal issues, hardships, and the same quest for the Magatama, albeit in a more sophisticated and urban setting.
