Sit Down, Shut Up

As part of Fox's foray into animation set in eccentric cornerstones of American culture, Sit Down, Shut Up graced the screen in 2009 as a tongue-in-cheek satire of classic high school tropes. Unlike the majority of educational-based animated series that painted teachers as heroes, this short-lived yet astutely sharp and witty show took a rebellious approach and focused on a motley crew of inept educators who were more obsessive about their flawed personal lives than their teaching duties.

The series takes place in the fictional town of Knob Haven, Florida, a region known for producing knobs, where the teachers at Knob Haven High School are decidedly more concerned about their dramatically chaotic lives than molding the future of their young students.

Kristin Chenoweth voices Miracle Grohe, the idealistic and naive science teacher who firmly believes in a range of non-scientific theories. She is especially fond of new-age beliefs, much to the dismay of her colleagues in the science department. In all, the staff of Knob Haven High School provides a perfect backdrop for delivering a unique blend of humor and contemporary social commentary.

Carefully crafted by Mitchell Hurwitz, creator of Arrested Development, the show oscillates between absurdist humor and moments of emotional humanity. It does an excellent job of sieving through the mundane routine of high school life from the teachers' perspective, despite the overarching irreverence. There is an underlying narrative that reflects the insecurities, disappointments, and ordinary joys of people who live life one school day at a time.

After all, the show's tongue-in-cheek title, Sit Down, Shut Up, is indicative of the frank irreverence and offbeat humor that the show draws inspiration from.
